Well since I've opened Henry up pretty much - down to block and crank - I can now mic eveything. I found using telscoping bore gage that at least #3 and #4 bores have about 0.006" to .008" out of round and taper. The sizes were in the range of 3.463" to 3.457" indicating to me that the sleeves were either bored hopefully 0.020" over, or some serious wear. The exisitng rings on the pistons are incredibly loose outside of the cylinder. I think I am to check end gap clearence while installed in bore. Also is the piston pull tested mentioned in I&T to be done with or without rings installed.

Either way - the questions are now:
1. is it better to put new sleeves or,
2. Rebore exisiting sleeves or,
3. Just go back with 0.020 over rings and forget about cylinders with no major scoring. Is taper and out of round too much? I&T says yes.

You would not have oversized sleeves would you?

Anyway - I am just getting started on this rebuild and will need alot advice. I have only rebuilt a couple of engines with my Dad many moons ago, now I am flat out dangerous with an engineering degree! Still remember the basics though.
If I need to have new sleeves installed or rebored I will obviously take it to a machine shop. I will have the heads reworked as well. Hopefully tomorrow I can mic the rod journals on the crank and inspect for wear. Crank has got to come out anyway - probably worn as well.

Bit the bullet and get the sleeve/piston kits for you enging and istall them correctly. Then your going to have a good engine. Get the moly rings for more lasting power, or chrome. last five times longer than original. check your piston pins for wear also, this keeps noise down. kits are cheap now. Use them. I like Napa kits. Still US made. (a dieing breed). Have someone install sleeves that has some experience on old engines, as some problems can show up he may know how to fix easily.

You can determine if the sleeves were bored before if there is little or no ridge at the top of the sleeve where the top piston ring reaches. If there is a ridge thick enough to catch your finger nail easily - it is probably by wear. I say your out of round numbers indicate replacement or boring. If you have it down anyway, I would replace the sleeves, that is what I did. Many have done an overbore as well - but with the cost of parts being negligable, I would bring it back to stock specs now.

If you buy the full rebuild kit - the rings will be fitted to the sleeves already - so you won't need to do the pull test.

I just rebuilt my NAA, so it is still pretty fresh in my memory. Let me know if I can help any more.

Dan- I just went through your web site and reviewed the pics. Whew man!! - looks like you did a bang up job on that one. How long did it take? and where is the final pic? Regarding the engine - did you pretty much follow the book and did you have any problems with engine? Would you have done aything differently. I am impressed - very well documented.

Thaks for the kind words. I don't have a "AFTER" pic yet because I am still working on it. I started this project in October last year, and all I have left is painting the sheet metal and wheel centers and installing them. I got new rear rubber installed a few weeks ago as well. I will update the web site as I progress to christening it.

As far as the engine was concerned, I recommend three things for a first timer. 1 - get an I&T FO-19 manual - not the Ford Service Manual. There are lots of good specs and proceedures in there. 2 - buy you a copy of the J&D Productions video on Engine Rebuilds on NAA engines. It is great to "see" the entire rebuild done step by step. You can get it on this site under the "Parts" link on top of the page or from several online suppliers. 3 - Post here with any questions or concerns. I couldn't have been so successful with my rebuild without these great folks here. They really know a lot about rebuilding old Ford tractor engines.

Mine came out great with no problems at all. Just do your research first - and you CAN do it. I never saw the insides of ANY engine before this project, and I did it.
