Jubilee - Proper Starter Solenoid?

While doing my 12 volt conversion this weekend I had a bit of trouble with wiring the starter solenoid. In all the schematics on the web for the 12V conversion it shows the starter button connected in series from the solenoid and going to ground.

To make a long story short, my solenoid is a Ford "4 post". It requires switched power to one of the two small posts (marked 'S'). This power line is controlled by putting the starter button upstream in the circuit.

My question: Is this the correct solenoid for the Jubilee/NAA? Or, did the previous owner use an automotive equivalent? Is this OK to use? (Seems to work fine for me!)

Thanks,

Paul.

It's the one I went to for my NAA rebuild. I didn't want the engine to turn over without the ignition key turned on, so I used it to achieve that. You do have to add a wire for the hot side of the coil, but that is easy enough. Make that wire hot all the time, it works like OEM. Make that wire hot only when the key is on, and the engine will turn over only when the key is on. The neutral safety switch is still working and the tractor must be in neutral to start. Makes more sense to me, and I can still pull the coil wire to spin it without fire to the plugs.

Paul.. in order to use the trany interlocked thumb switch .. your solenoid needs to be the oem 3 terminal ( internally hot ) unit.. or a 4 terminal isolated one, with one side wired hot.. and the other side wired to the thumb switch. Sounds like you have a 4 wire 'ignition bypass' style.. I'll bet the other small terminal is marked 'I'

That coil really won't work for you .. IF you want the interlocked starter thumb switch.

Like Dell said.. it's your call to keep it or set it up back as oem with the safety interlocked starter switch.

SouNdguy:

It definitely is the ignition bypass solenoid. Works fine with my non-OEM starter button wired to the 'S' post. As Dell states 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.

My OEM starter button is painted solid. If I ever need to replace the solenoid I'll pick up the proper one and a new OEM starter switch and wired it up 'right'.

Paul.

Paul..... ..my N-Ford MPC lists the remotely mounted NAA starter solenoid as p/n 21A-11450, relay assy, starter motor. And shows it as a 3-terminal unit with 2-HEAVY STUDS for battery connections and a small stud for grounding by the tranny thumb switch.

With a NON-tractor starter solenoid..... ALL BETTS ARE OFFF. But iff'n it works for you as it is now, don't fix what ain't broken that you don't understand..... ...Dell
