Hello,

I"ve just rebuilt by oil pump and have rebolted the oil pickup tube back on. Does anyone know what these 3 bolts should be torque"d to?

Also, what is the proper gauge of mechanics wire to be used on these bolts after torqueing.

Thanks everyone

We called it safety wire in USN aviation, and we safety wired everything on the airplane. The wire is available on ebay in several sizes. Here's a link about safety wire.

Some critical bolts (the ones you DEFINATELY do not want to unscrew down deep in the bowels of the engine - usually rod and main bearing bolts and such) have holes drilled through them from flat spot to flat spot where the sockets fit on. You run mechanics wire through these holes once they are bolted in place and connect all the bolts together with a single piece of wire. This way, the bolts cannot unscrew because the wire will not let them turn. I think this was developed before thread lockers - that is what I use now in most cases unless it is a place I feel I want to look impressive to the next guy who opens it up :)

Oil pickup tube to oil pump cover plate - 10-15 lbs.

Not sure of the actual guage of mechanics wire - I just have a roll of the standard size. Make sure it is stainless.

Good luck,
Dan

Old Harleys use safety wire in a few places too. I use stainless welding wire as safety wire. We do cavitation repairs on the turbines at work all in stainless and I scoop the spool ends. I got enough to last me the rest of my life and everyone I know's life! LOL!
