I know this is so far off topic, but you people are the best for advice on anything. Issue I have is computer related. Set up here is new Dell XP pro and Windows 98SE computers set up on simple hub with two printers. XP would not print to the printers though the hub, so bought a Netgear PS110/PS113 print server for the network. It has network cable connection and two LPT ports to feed the printers. The two computers will see each other fine.

The reason I need to put printers on print servers is that I need to take down and reload the 98SE computer.

I have loaded software and downloaded new software and the network absolutely not see that device. I even shut down all security services and logged in as Administrator and tried it again, in fact several times.

Has anyone out there experienced problems with this device or can offer any advice ? BTW, yes I submitted report and questions to Netgear all to no avail. First time I have ever had problems with a Netgear product.

What kind of a hub are you using? is this 10baseT ? 100baseTX? is the print server T or TX Many networks that have different segments of T an TX devices don't see each other.. you have to have a hub with a switch for that ( router may work ).

I think I would have used a usbshare device. connects two computers to a printer.. get two of them.. all it would do is eat up 2 usb ports on each cpu at worst.

I've had no problems with ethernet print servers between a 98 and xp machine.. and even wireless print servers connecting thrue a NAP on an ethernet..

Is the xp machine setup for that printer?

I can help.

1. Get rid of the Netgear thing and start from scratch. Is your hub an ethernet hub? Are all devices plugged into the hub?

2. Do you have tcp/ip addresses in all devices? What are the addresses for each device?

3. Can you ping each device by tcp/ip address from your XP Pro machine?

This will get us started.

To answer both of yours questions, one post below.

What kind of a hub are you using? is this 10baseT ? 100baseTX?

Tried two different ones, at different times of course. Any and all changes are made with computers shut down, connect items and then reboot.

One Hub is Netgear PS104 Dual speed, it was the one I had used on this setup when it was all Win98SE and it had worked for ever using both printers. Each Printer has a Jetdirect attached to them at that time.

So, when I took out one Win 98 machine and put in the XP Pro my problems started. The XP would not see and use the printers when just it was booted. So, on advice of a friend, I swapped out the Netgear and put in a Linksys (Cisco) EZXS55W Network switch instead of the Netgear. No help, same issue, can see both printers from the 98SE one, but NOT XP one.

I can help.

1. Get rid of the Netgear thing and start from scratch. Is your hub an ethernet hub? Are all devices plugged into the hub?
Did that in step two. And yes all items plugged in.

2. Do you have tcp/ip addresses in all devices? What are the addresses for each device?
Big problem with the tcp/ip as I can NOT ping the new devices, I.E. the HUB, that software absolutely will not load! It starts up, starts searching the network for devices and then just quits. No error messages, not nothing.

3. Can you ping each device by tcp/ip address from your XP Pro machine?

Can ping the other computer no problem. Can ping the Epson and the HP printer, when I have the ole set up running, the Netgear. But that set up requires me to have the old 98SE computer up and running and sharing those printers.

The XP Pro will never see those printers or the Netgear Print Server.

I am to the point now of calling some local company to come out and set this durn thing up. Wife is not a happy camper as I am on HER new computer, the XP one and she has to wait her turn. Can?t blame her really.

Thanks for the questions and ideas guys,, keep it up!! Anyone of you in the Fort Worth Texas area? :-)

I am in Fort Worth as I type...

XP Pro has a firewall, maybe we should try to disable that before we go further.

Right click on My Network Places
Click Porperties
Right click on Ethernet Connection
Click Properties
Click Advanced tab
Click Settings button
Click Off radio button
Click OK

Make sure that the tcp/ip addresses are all correct. The first three octets should all be the same (192.168.1.xxx) and the last octet on all devices should be different. You will have to check the HP Jetdirect servers as well. It really sounds like a tcp/ip address problem on the XP box to me.

Don't know if this will help, but when I set up my network of xp home and win98fe and one printer and ethernet, I followed the instructions and guides on the link below. Worked like a charm for me and hope it will help you. Steve
