Guys,

I just picked up a good compression tester for a great price locally and decided to check out my old 8N that I recently purchased (even though I know Claus eluded to the fact - that why check a running/working engine w/no apparent problems at all) - but I am young, and foolish I guess.
haha.

The numbers seem a bit low but they are consistent - I ran the tests 3 times in each cylinder and averaged the totals: (nothing to average really - they all tested indentical)

CYL1 - 100
CYL2 - 100
CYL3 - 100
CYL4 - 100

What does this mean? Is the engine in good shape? How come some get readings in the 110-140 range?
Why is consistancy important?

Any other thoughts? I burn no oil nor have any smoke - I do have a slight POP/SPUTTER in my exhaust every 7-10 secs - Fuel/Carb problem?

Thanks so much.
Andy

FYI - I just installed new sleeves, pistons and rings on my N. Two hours running time on engine. After two hours checked compression. Read 110 lbs dry across all 4 cyl.

Dillweed, thanks for the info. I was told and I was given receipts of a partial engine rebuild and overhaul when I bought the tractor on 3/12/2001 - but I couldn't verify it directly. I guess the 115 across proves that while not "factory perfect" (obviously) - it is a great tractor.

Hey Andy, my 48's compression runs from 100 - 110. Last summer I mowed waist high orchard and timothy grass, blackberry briars and a bunch of 1" and larger saplings. The hog was set a about 8" (CRP regs). Had very little problems and even mowed going up some hills.

Having the engine rebuilt now, was burning a quart of oil about every 4 hrs. Curious what the improvement will when I do that kind of mowing again this year.

This is probably what Claus meant, did your measuring and now your worried, probably abour nothing.
Later,
Jim

Al, thanks!
Ok now I tested with the adjustments mentioned about and I am getting the following across the cylinders -

CYL1 115
CYL2 115
CYL3 115
CYL4 115

Does that seem better? I am still not getting that high 120-140 --- Any other advice?

Hi Andy: If you've got 115 on all four cylinders dry, you've got nothing to worry about. 90psi is the stated minimum, though many N-owners use the heck out of their N's running less than that. Have fun with it, but be careful.

Andy..... .consistant compression readings make for eazier starting.

I know a lot of N-Owners that would almost kill for 100 psi let alone 115. I donna wanna alarm you, but you might wanna start watchin' yer backside (grin)..... ...Dell

That ought to get them started.....Like Dell said, There is nothing wrong with your compression. These are low compression engines. (That is why they can run on fox urine.) Yours is great. Shudda listened to me...
Happy Motoring

Hi Andy, When you did the compression test was the throttle open? Did you crank the engine until the reading on the compression tester stopped increasing? Did you have all the plugs out when you did the test? Was the engine cranking quickly, or was the battery low? Are you confident the gauge is accurate? If yes to all these questions, your compression is on the low side. Good luck...Al English

No, the throttle was at about 1/2 at best on the plate. Was I supposed to open it completely? I did crank until it stopped rising - No I only had 1 plug out at a time - I loosen up the other plugs but didn't remove them. I did remove all wires and did have the ignition switch off. Engine seemed to cranking ok. Gauge was brand new in box - I cannot determine its accuracy at this time.

Would these things cause a normal increase in compression readings, Al? Please explain. It sounds great, starts great and has plenty of power. maybe it is really 110 or 120 across the board?

Help.
Andy

Andy, Compression can vary from one engine to the next. As you say, it runs good, has plenty of power, and doesn't burn oil. The fact all the cylinders are the same is also a good sign. Because your compression is good I doubt the exhaust sputtering you mentioned is being caused by a leaking or out of adjustment exhaust valve. Bottom line, nothing to worry about...Al English
