Can someone tell me how much "rocking" front to back play there is in a new king pin and bushing set. I am getting a lot of play front to back in the axle, and since it is off I"m wondering if it is worth while to knock out the pin and bushing. I tried to tap it out but it looks like shes in there tight. How hard should it be to knock the pin out? Thanks in advance for your comments. Ron

Got out the sledge and used 1/2 of an old 3/4 inch black pipe union, fit perfect, out she came. Pivot pin was in good shape but the bushing was almost paper thin. I installed a new bushing from the Ford dealer...Question?? How do you lubricate this bushing?? It looks as if a squirt of Oil on the top is the only way. Dropped off the engine block the other day should see it back in a week. Pistons/Sleeves/Valves/Crank journals all need fixin up. I"m sure it will feel like a new machine when she"s done. Ron

You don't lubricate the bushing. Clean the hole out with some fine grit sandpaper to get the rust/corrosion/dirt out. You don't need to do a lot, just clean it up. Then, press it in with a large hammer and a board in between for even pressure on the bushing. It needs to be snug in the bore to keep from moving.

If you can get your engine support off, I discovered a 1 1/4" socket fit just right into the hole and acted like a bushing driver. I pounded mine out from the back this way with a 3 lb. hammer. Then I put the thick 3/4" spacer and three smaller spacers on, and a new bushing, and now I have a tight axle with just a little play just like you want it.

Here is a pic of the finished job on my Project Rustbucket. Of course it is an NAA model, but will be similar to yours. You can see more detailed side pics on my website.

Mine had a steel bush'n in it and wuz a PITA to remove. It would not knock out had to saw out. If I had it to do over I would have left it along. A brass'in should not be much trouble and I would replace it.

A new pin and bushing should come apart easy. The 50yr old but unworn pin and bushing came off my "51 without a hammer. I grabbed it with channel-locks, rocked it a couple times, and pulled it out.
Point is, if you have to beat a new pin out or in, you got a problem. That axle support can be distorted and beaten up pretty good. My "44 was beat up pretty good. I spent time and money getting the axle support squared away. You can replace it for about $350.
Anyway, what do you mean "front to back"? I added "51 spacers to my "44 axle and it"s a lot better tractor now.

Yes, if you are able to rock it back and forth I would definitely replace it while you have it apart..It might be Very hard to get out. Mine was. I finally got a drift pin that just fit inside of the king pin and was able to drive it out with an 8lb sledge hammer. I had given up on getting it out but everyone kept telling me that all I needed was a GBH(great big hammer) and I did...
