I have a 1939 Ford 2N, with 3 headbolts that have snapped off in the bloke, they are a 7/16 14 coarse thread bolt an i have used a 9/32 drill with a 3/8 th. extractor,no.7-9(Snap-On number, an they are stuck harder then a wedge in a green log, does anyone have any ideas if i apply heat or any other idea on how to get these studs out?

Lay a 1/2" nut over the stud and weld it to the stud. Use a wire welder if possible set on a fairly high setting but not so high that the metal is burned up. Let it cool to room temperature and shoot it with magic oil and let that soak for few minutes and try to bring it out by turning the nut that is hopefully welded to the stud.

When I worked at the Anniston Army depot about 10 years ago the track for the machine gun turrett on the M1 tanks had about a zillion 1/4" inch bolts holding the turrett track to the main casting of the tank hull. It never failed that a few of them would be twiste off in the casting. There was a welding crew in the turrett shop and their main job was removing these broken off flush bolts from the castings. The way they did it was to acetylene weld/braze a bead onto the ends of these 1/4" broken flush bolts by hand and build up on the ends of the bolts until there was enough metal to catch with a pair of vice grip pliers. I saw them remove hundreds of these broken bolts and never saw them fail to bring the broken bolts out. Usually on the first try. They always did it while the bolt was hot and soon as they could clamp the vice grips onto the welded bolt. I have done it on some bolts too but it is an art to weld/braze with acetylene onto steel.

Use a mild steel welding rod with no flux. Sparks will fly but if you do it right it will work!

When I have to drill out broken bolts, I use a left handed drill bit. This way if the bit catches it will put pressure to loosen the broken bolt. If you are dead center with the 9/32, you could try a 5/16 bit and then try to pick the remaining threads out or carefully chase the threads with a 7/16-14 tap.

You can use your head as a guide to drill the bolts out. Then go back with a helicoil if all else fails. Also be careful heating the block or you may end up with a real mess. It would have been a good idea to use the head as a guide to start your drilling. Then you would have the center of the bolt just right.

No that is a great idea! I will have to remember that one. Also, thanks for the tip on heating the block, I keep forgeting not everyone is stuck with just a plumbers propane torch as their only heat source :-)

Rick - you are in a real pickle with the bolts snapped below the block deck. I would start filling the holes up with penetrating oil now and let it sit for a few hours. Heat up the bolt the best you can, then add more penetrating oil. Repeat for a few days before you try to get the bolt out if your plan is to use a bolt extractor. Use the biggest one you can put in, and use the wedge type - not round. Know that if this hardened bolt extractor snaps also - you will REALLY be in bad shape.

The only other safer solution would be to center punch the bolts in the EXACT center and drill the bolts out. Works every time and is quick, you just gotta make sure you don't get into the threads on the block.

Good luck,
Dan

Lay a flat washer over the broken stud, and weld the HECK out of it to the stud, heating the stud up in the process. Then, weld a nut to the washer to have something to grip.

Let everthing cool to ambient, add some magic loosen juice, and likely the broken stud can be unscrewed. If not, repeat the procedure a time or two until the stud lets go and unscrews.

I just did this today on 11 bolts broken in the block of a flathead 226 1956 JEEP. Happy to say they are ALL OUT, and the customer is HAPPY!

Got a timing set for that 226 Jeep Hurricane "6"?

It's the WIDE chain.

(No, this isn't "OT"! The Jeep is taking up shop space, where my latest "N" would like to be, out of the weather!)
