Gone to great extents to rebuild my ol "Henrys" engine and darned if the machine shop called today and said that my head was cracked in four places. Several of which ran completely to top of head. I did notice quite a carbon build up in the top of the head at #1 & #2 cyl - but I never really had any plug issues there. Always on #3 and #4 did they really foul up (wet) . I also had a cracked exhust manifold on #4 that I found during teardown.
I told machine shop to go ahead with the block - i hope they don't find anything. Question is - can this thing be safely welded or brazed? New or rebuilt are expensive $450-$700. Any of you guys have a head laying around to fit a Jubilee/NAA? Will other head from 600,800 or others work? I saw one on ebay today for ind tractor 172 engine - guy wasn't real certain about it.
There are also replacement heads available too.
Any good advice and/or support needed. I darn near took a finger off getting flywheel off - I ain't gonna let this one sit.

Here is what I found when I pulled the head on Rustbucket. Seems to be a common problem with NAAs. The head for a 172ci will fit on a 134ci engine I discovered. Also, there is a newer casting (300xxx casting) that doesn't crack very easy. I got lucky and got my replacement head from John the Old Tractor Guy. I just went through every part of the NAA tractor, let me know if I can help.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan,
I thought your head was cracked. I remember seeing the "big valley" in the block you had machined 0.017 down. I have heard of the old tractor guy, but don't know how to get in touch with him. You have his number? You didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for head did you? I found some casting numbers that are supposedly similiar if not the same:
EAE6090
EAE6085
310098
310100
The head off of ol Henry was 6090F. I haven't seen the cracks but I can only imagine after all of the carbon was burned/blasted off with cleaning equip.
Thanks for the feedback.

Send me an email and I will forward you his email addy. I unlocked my email address on this post. I got the head for a very reasonable cost and the valves were good and holding gas (even though I did a full valve job anyway). John is a great guy to boot. The head I got was a EAE 6090H.

When I rebuilt the engine on my NAA it too had a cracked head, but I don't think it was as bad as yours. Anyway the machine shop was able to weld the crack up. I don't know if a 172 cid head would work.
