8n runs rough under load

I have a 1948 8n, with a recently re-built block. I have been tinkering with it lately, and am experienceing a few problems. It runs smooth as silk at high or low throttle, but as soon as it is under load (hot or cold), it runs rough. By load, I mean running a brush-hog, or even just driving up a steep hill. It never dies, just skips and misses, and sometimes seems like it is starved for fuel. If I throw it in neutral, the engine smooths right out. Carb and fuel screens are all clean. Could it be a carb adjustment?, wires? coil?, points and plugs are fairly new, but I'll try some new ones for the heck of it.

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

I agree with checking out the distributor advance weights. So often those little weights can rust up or springs break. The two tractors I have bought both had that problem.

Alan Double check the plug wires at the dist. Should be 1-2-4-3 going counter clockwise around the dist It's amazing how smoothly these things will run under no load with a 3-4 wire reversal and how rough under load. Sounds weird but it happens. HTH

Alan..... Jims advice about enriching the carb main jet is excellent place to start.

I would question if your governor is working properily. There is also the question wheather your distributor advance is working.
And when was the last time you replaced your sparkplug wires, they get old and cracked and the sparkies leak off to ground because it is eazier. Sparkies are lazy.

I tend to discount a bad ignition coil at this time based on your report of smooth running..... ...Dell

Alan, The first and easiest adjustment would be to turn the carb main adjustment needle 1/8 to 1/4 turn in the counter-clockwise direction. This will make your mixture a little richer. If this helps. Then recommend you put a heavy load on the tractor and pto (bush hogging tall growth) and adjust in 1/8 turns counter-clock wise until the engine is smooth under load. The total final adjustment should really be within 1/2 turn of your current setting, if it seems to run OK with minimal load. This is a good first try to fix.
Get back to us with your results, I sure the board will have more suggestions. Good Luck, Jim

The carburator adjustment seemed to do the trick, but I may replace the ignition wires, coil and plugs anyway. Thanks for the help!!

Alan,

Something to take note of concerning ignition wires. Do NOT use the modern carbon core/high tension wires used on our cars! 8Ns (lower voltage) don't like that. Make sure you use solid copper core wires for the best results.

One step at a time, Jim
