Have a 49 pre 216xxx. Installed new bearings top & bottom on steering column and reassembled spindles. Tested left to right and immediately tore up top and bottom bearings. Any ideas what I might have done wrong? Checked everything per the manual and lined everything up correctly. Do I need additional shims on top of the housing to create more play in the column? HELP!

Expalin a little more how you 'tore them up'.

Did you tightent he heck out of them with the wrong number of shims? and have way too much preload.. as evidenced byt the cover setting off the box?
