My 48 8N was sputtering for a while and then it died last week so I ordered a buncha new electrical stuff, the original wiring harness would shed chunks of insulation everytime it was moved so I replaced that , I put a new coil and rotor on it a month ago , I just installed the following items today:
- new wiring harness
- new spark plug wires
- new points & condenser
- new distributor cap
- new voltage regulator

after all that the bugger has no spark , any and all suggestions welcome.
thanks

When you crank over the engine , does the ammeter bounce? My guess is no. Put a test light to the primary wire on the coil, grounding the clip end. Be careful of the pulley and fan. Turn ignition on, crank the engine If the points are working properly, the light will blink off and on. If the light is off all of the time, do you have power to the coil? Check this by taking the primary wire off the coil and check with a volt meter or a simple test. Check between the primary wire and ground. If you have power, continue on. If not, back up and find out where your circuit is open. Leaving the wire off the coil still, check for power on both sides of the resistor, the key switch and the ammeter. If you find power on one side only, that part is open, replace it. If the light is always off during the cranking test, and there is power to the primary wire, the ignition system is grounded somewhere. The possibilities here are: 1. The points are not opening.
2. The breaker plate assembly is grounding out at the insulated connections.(I"ve had three off these inthe last week)
3. Condenser wire or metal strap is grounding.
4. The condenser could be shorted internally.
5. Once in a great while, the coil spring lead gets bent over to the case rather than hitting the screw. If the light is always on, you have power to the coil but you have an open circuit beyond this point. These possibilities include:
1. Open coil
2. Coil spring spring lead is not touching the screw.
3. Strap between the two screws is broken.
4. The points are not closing.
5. The points are closing but are pitted or corroded and not making a connection.
6. Corrosion at any connection. If the light is blinking and you still have no spark, move on to the secondary, but it sounds like you have replaced everything there. Make sure metal tabs on the rotor and the coil are ok. Only other thing , is the distributor turning. Rare, but could happen. Good hunting.
