OT,,, just finished mowing my folks 27 acres with his Case diesel. Durn it is sure hard to go over there and work where I spent my growing up years. Sad to see it no longer used. We used to run Herefords and hay fields on it year round. I know every rock, pebble, hole, fence post, and tree or bush on that place. Now all that is there is some horses that the lady across the road keeps on there .

Daddy is really getting down and losing more memory since his strokes last year. Don't know how much longer they can continue to live there alone. Can't drive any more at all. They don't eat right, won't allow any outside help to come in . Mother has run off or fired everyone we or the assisted living help people have sent over.

A good meal to him now is something nuked in the microwave. One of my brothers or we will take them out at times, but that is getting harder to do because he won't use his walker or his cane and we are afraid he will fall.

Not really looking for any answers, just felt like telling someone besides my wife who has heard it all over and over.

Sure going to miss that place once it is gone, it is 27 acres in Arlington Texas, one of the largest private owned places around any more I guess. And before you ask, nope, can't afford to buy it, we are talking some big money here.

Oh well,, I feel better now..

Thanks for the OT. This thread has been a big help to many on the list, I am sure. The day is coming, or the day is in the past-- either way the sentiments advanced here are helpful. Thanks for the caring comments-- makes us all feel a little better at the end of the day. I'd like to send this to all my 40-year old kids---- but I'm afraid they would be as un-understanding as I was at their age. Each family has to deal with the ultimate results as they can-- that's life. Thanks for your well-thought out comments, all. It what makes this a great list.... Carl in VT

Dad is 80 now- still drives& gets around well. We meet every morning M-F for coffee and to boil down all the world's problems. I cherish every minute of it. I do the maintenance on the 26 acres now. That's how i found this board-trying to fix two tractors-40 9n& 45 2n.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I know you can't afford to buy the place, but can you have your folks put your name on the title? Don't know the laws in Texas, but it works other states. Just a thought..... .

Thanks for sharing your story. My folks aren't as old as yours so as of now I don't have to deal with these issues, but I'm sure I will someday. One of the great things about this board is not only is it a great place to learn about tractors but its a great place to vent as well. Best of luck with your situation.

Boy is it hard, no doubt about it. The first time I asked if the bills were getting payed it was obvious they were hurt but then were glad I asked. They had the money, just remembering to pay them and which ones they had payed was getting to be a problem. Getting them to do things like dental appointments and getting hair cuts became our responsibility. Seemed like there were three or four doctors to see each week. Enjoy these times, make them fun, because someday even these will be gone and it hurts even more. I know, it is just the way life is, but don't miss a moment to help or be with them. Down the road you will be greatful for every moment you spent helping and being with them. No regrets and eventually you will remember the good times more than the sad ones.

Thanks for sharing! You can see many of us are facing similar situations.

My parents are gone now. My mother most recently. At the graveside, my oldest brother looked at me and said, "We're next!"

Puts all of this into perspective.

Enjoy life while you have it!... with an N and beer! :-)

Went through that a few years back with my mother with alzeimers (sp?). Didn't know me for about 3 years before she passed away. My Dad went first at 87 and then mother went 6 months later in 1998. I have a sister that dragged out disposing of the estate due to her and a brother not getting along until both he and his wife died at Thanksgiving day and New Years day this past winter.

I only go home about 2 times a year and have to stay in a hotel then. The other sibling, 2 years younger is in the nursing home for life for the last 5 years.

The place looks terrible now,all grown up and uninhabited now since 1998.

And finally my sister wants to dispose of the place.

Well, there's not a day goes by that I don't think of my Dad and Mom. It took a few years to begin to actually remember them the way they lived their life and not just the last 2-3 years of pain. I still remember my Dad crying as he cared for my mother. The only time in my entire life I ever saw that.

So, good luck to you and it is a difficult trail you are embarking on. It often takes a strong individual to cope with it all. Don't make the mistake that we did and try to let them take care of themselves too long or things like falls and broken hips come into the equation.

My old brother who just died a few months back used to say, there are special places in heaven for people who honor their parents the way you are.

You have a tough task ahead of you. My parents are 87 and 90 years old and have been the source of a lot of heart wrenching decisions over the past few years. It is difficult to see your parents go through this.

My hat is off to you for caring for your aging parents.

My wife is only 53 years old and is severely disabled due to a brain tumor (she has been this way for over 8 years now).

I pay a lady to stay with her during the day so I can work full time.

I know she could be worse so I try to look at the glass half full instead of half empty.

Hang in there and be as good to your folks as you can for as long as you can.

Rick

I know where you are coming from. It was a sad day when my dad's 25 acre bahia field where he ran cows was planted in pines. I can remember so many times him telling me how he had cleared it with a mule and plowed out the terraces and ditches to prevent erosion. We were lucky that we had enough siblings to take care both he and my mom when they got sick. My wife and I moved in to care for my mom until she passed away and one my brothers and his wife moved in to care for dad until he passed away. It's tough. Just do what you can do and enjoy the good times.

I live just up the road in Garland, I didn't know there was any 27 acre lots still in Arlington :-)

I know what you mean about your father, I watched my grandmother go through the exact same thing. Did not want to be a bother to anyone, would not eat right (cookies and such), memory going VERY fast. My father finally just forced her to go to a assisted living center (they are in a small town, so it was not what I was expecting like the big city ones I see that neglect the old folks) that was within 5 miles of their place. It was a night and day change when she started eating regularly and nutritious foods, interacting with others, and using her brain. At 93, her momory is back - well mostly :-), she interacts well, and is as spry as ever. I know it is hard, but I really feel if you could actually find a decent assisted living center in the big city (good luck) you would see a HUGE difference in your parents, but I know how hard it is to make that decision and force them to accept it as well.

I have been there.

Good luck to you and your family,
Dan

Yep, I do understand what you are saying about the eating regularly and nutritious foods, interacting with others. Saw Daddy pick right up while he was in the hospital and rehab place. Mother is the major problem. She just refuses to have any help. I am afaird we are about to the point of all the brothers just physically moving them out where they can get more help.

Mother just absolutely refuses to get any help and has been told that if she doesn't have her other eye lens replacment done she will be blind in that eye..

Jeeze,,, ok, will call the brothers this weekend and try to explain that enough is enough!

Wish we luck!!!

Thanks to all you guys for your imput,, will keep you advised, when I have something good to post.

Cheers!!!!

Thats a tough deal for sure..I can barely stand to go to my moms place anymore, lost dad almost 3 years ago.. Moms had a couple strokes,so she rarely gets out of the house anymore..it"s tough.
Enjoy the time ya got left with them.. I used to get so tired of hearing my dads stories, same ones over and over.. I"d give anything to hear one today..

Hey Dan, How far is Garland from Plano,I"m gonna be down there in late Sept for a class at UGS..

I work next door to EDS, as a matter of fact I can look out my window and see the EDS complex (over the cow/buffalo pasture of course). I helped them put telecom equipment in that building when it was going up, I worked in their telecom department for 7 1/2 years in my past life. I now work on Legacy and Preston right next door to them. Sounds like you will be just a few miles up the road from where I work.
