PTO pops out of gear

I have a '39 9N which seems to have "loose" gears in the rear. When using a mower, occasionally the PTO drive will pull out of gear. It doesn't seem to be related to a certain power requirement, just happens randomly. Any suggestions for repair would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if there could be worn shims or if I have to replace the entire transmission. The gear shift will "chatter" when the tractor is shut off and you try to move it manually.

Thanks for any assistance. I'm new to the 9N.

A permanent, proper fix is of course prefered, but I've found that a bungy cord when applied correctly will keep the lever in place.

Had that problem years ago when the 9N was doing all the field work on dads farm. Turned the problem that time was that the bolt securing the shifter fork to the rail had come loose.
good luck, hope it's something as simple as that.

The usual reason that the PTO jumps out of gear is that the beaing or the bearing retaining snapring is out of place in the bearing housing. Or that the beaing retaining collar has moved on the shaft allowing the PTO shaft to move forward and back. This is sometimes caused by the telecoping portion of the drive shaft on a bush hog not being adaquetly lubricated or the drive shaft being too long allowing the telescoping portion to be jamed into the PTO housing thus causing damage to the bearing and related parts.

The movement of the shaft back and forth is what is causing the PTO to jump out of gear.

The PTO has little to do with the transmission except that it is driven off the counter shaft in the transmission. Your problem is fairly common. This is usually caused by the PTO Shifter Rail slipping out of the detent. You may have to replace the detent ball, spring and or shifter rail.
