Have been working fevereshly but cautiously on rebuilding ol Henry this past weekend (this has been everyh weekend since the forth). Everything is going smooth and I notice after remounting engine that the hydraulic pump gear (mounted on end of canshaft) seems to be too far away from engine. Hmmm. Only about 2/3rd of the gear face is exposed thru the pump mounting hole. Uh Oh?!!
Did I put this gear on backwards???? Will if fit backwards?? OH NO -- SAY IT AIN'T SO!! OOOHHHH NOOO.. I didn't do this did I? I remember going by the witness marks last weekend. The hyd pump itself shows full tooth wear. Please somebody tell me if gear on end of camshaft can be put on backwards - I guess I could put pump on and see if it works or pull pump off other Jubilee for a look see. I don't want to take this engine off again. Anybody know about this enough to let me know?

If you replaced the cam timing gear it is possible that the gear didn't get all the way up on the camshaft that like it should have????? ?
This might account for the rear gear being out of alignment
If the rear gear were on backwards the gear teeth would not mesh and the pump could not be installed at all.

Just going back through my rebuild pics, there is one very clear pic of this camshaft gear positioning on my website. Check it out, it may help answer your question.

Good luck,
Dan

The gear on the end of the cam shaft should be angled so if you are looking at it through the opening in the block, it is from top right to bottom left (imagine a line drawn from the top right of your block to the bottom left). I reused my pump gear, and made sure I put it back on the same way. You could still see where the washer was on the outside of the gear that the proofmeter gear butts up against. If your camshaft gear is like I described, make sure your pump gear will line up and that will tell you if it is on correctly.

BTW - the pump gear does not stick out very much at all from the pump mating surface.

Good luck,
Dan

... Hyd Gear Backwards? - Somethings wrong in reply to Dan, 07-24-2005 18:18:38
Hmmm. Something is definantley wrong with your picture Dan!!! OH NO..my wife i going to kill me. I appreciate your input and it looks like I need to split this thing again. My gear is only exposed about 2/3rd to 3/4th of the way - more on the left side looking at mount hole. But pointing as you described. What could I have done wrong? Anybody else care to shed some light on this. Am I about to pay stupid tax twice by having to take him down again?

Can you take a pic of the gear installed or describe what angle it is sitting?

No picture required on this one Dan. Just as I thought and your photo confirmed I had installed the hyd pump gear backwards. It was barely rubbing the cover plate and only had about 2/3rds of gear face showing. I reversed the gear and it still pointed the same direction as you had described and just like the paper model I sketched - I love helical gears!! LOL - Oh well - it was the first thing I put on the engine after I got the cam in newly sleeved block - overly anxious I suppose. Lesson learned and it did come apart alot easier the second time! Thanks again for your support and feedback. More later as I have to put engine back on tomorrow - oh BTW - I did get a new pressure plate and will get newer flywheel. Yeah! Trying to reduce the odds of having to go back a third time.

Be careful -
