This past weekend, I learned of a 1940 9N for sale, and I am considering buying it.

The old timer who owns it drives it everywhere - he doesn't own a car. He drove to the horse show we were at both days, and I saw him leaving the restaurant on it.

It looks like it's in good shape. He said it needs front tires, but that's about all.

He's asking $3,000(Cdn).

Any suggestions on what my next step should be?

Thanks

Tractor auction at Guelph Ont. would not get that price for a 1940. I bought 2 nice 1940,s with 32" tires, smooth hubs, running nice, $3000 for the pair. Burt in Ont.

If you buy it, what will the old timer drive to breakfast?

Have you looked it over close-up and in person? Your comment that 'He says it needs new front tires..." leads me to believe you have not. You need to do so so you can determine: Does it have good oil pressure? Does the hydraulic lift work properly and hold up a load. Does it have any funny noises in the engine, transmission, or rear end? Are the rear tires in good shape? Does it overheat easily, might need new radiator.

All that said, I think he is probably not too outrageous on his price (what is the canadian exchange rate these days anyhow?). All of the things mentioned above can be fixed, but they all cost money too.

A 9N in good working order and looking reasonably good should fetch between US $2000 and $2500. If it needs repairs etc the price should come down from there.

Survey the photo ads on this site and you will see a bunch of N series tractors in various condition to give you an idea of what they go for.
