Hi All,

I have not needed to seek troubleshooting advice in a while but now I do. The problem is on my newer Ford 2310 but I know you all are multitalented when it comes to troubleshooting all kinds of tractors.

This past weekend I wanted to use my Ford 2310 diesel (1983 model) and the battery was dead as doornail. I used it for about 3 hours a week ago and no problems (didn’t leave the switch or lights on either).

I took the battery out and had it checked and recharged and it checked out good. I put it back in and used the tractor this afternoon and it ran great.

I took my voltmeter and checked the alternator output at the battery terminals and it was charging about 14 to 15 volts so I assume it is good.

What I did find is when I shut the engine off and turned the key switch off the idiot lights for the oil and alternator were burning dimly, even with the key out of the switch. When I turn the switch on, the idiot lights seem to burn normally but they keep burning dimly with the switch off. I assume this is why my battery was drained down. I disconnected the negative battery terminal until I can figure out what the problem is.

I would appreciate any experienced advice on this problem. Is it the switch or the voltage regulator, or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Rick H. Ga.

Almost sounds like the switch is shorting out. Not sure what kind of key switch it is. Check the wiring on the back of it. Any loose strands of wire touching each other? If it's not a sealed switch maybe spray some type of cleaner into it!
Just guessing. Don't know enough about the wiring to know if regulator or alternator could cause it.

its just 1 idea, but carefully clean and check all the ground cables, bad grounds can cause all kinds of weird electrical things to happen, ive been caught more than once by just that
