It embarresses me to have to ask this but... I am rebuilding a 9N and am in the process of reassembling it and I have a part that I can not remember where it came from. I have searched in the F04 but it is not shown or described. It is a die cut and pressed part that is 2 13/16" OD and 1 3/8" ID. It has four prongs cut and pressed up on it and appears to be some kind of pressure spring washer or some kind of spacer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does it look like this? That is indeed the camshaft thrust washer and has been left off MANY times by others - don't feel bad.

Good luck,
Dan

Yup, Bob is right. If you look at the camshaft, the recessed area where the gear is pressed onto the hub is where this thrust washer goes. It basically presses against the camshaft and the timing cover to keep the camshaft from trying to come out of the engine from the front. The four tabs should face the camshaft gear and the smooth face goes against the timing cover. A question isn't dumb at all if you learn from it. I've been there myself many times!

You just answered a problem for me, I have a 41 9N that I am slowly in the prossess of rebuilding. Started the rebuild because of a knock that I was getting and was told by a parts & machinery dealer that I han a wrist pin bearing going bad, I knew it was using oil so I tore it down and had new sleaves put in and after getting things back and starting to put it back together I found that the camshaft was moving back and forward and hitting the distributator bolts and they had cut a grove in the ribs on the camshaft gear and the knock was coming from every time a bolt hit the rib and pushed the shaft back for the bolt to slide over and I though there should have been something to hold the shaft back but could not find it in all the books I have nor when I asked that question on this board I was not able to get the information I needed so now the next thing is to find that piece. What is the part No.? to buy new. Thanks

Well, you at least now have a picture of it. I beleive that it is shown in the FO-4 but really just looks like a big washer behind the timing cover there in the pictures. I don't recall what the part number is, but I lost mine and had to get another one. I was luckily able to find one at my local junkyard and got it for cheap since they didn't know what it was (maybe $3 or $5). Your safest bet would be to get up with John Smith as he usually has parts like that laying around.

I have 2 different issues of the FO-4 manual first copyright date 1953, second date of 1995 and neither mentions it in any way, also an orignal 1943 service manual for owners and mechanics and nothing in it either. The Master parts catalog shows what appeares to be a flat washer, calls it a part no 8N 6276 Spring (camshaft thrust) with 4 holes that look like they would bolt in with the plate 6258 that is fast to the bolts that hold the camshaft gear on and that the book calls a ring (camshaft gear locking) but nothing to show how it goes in or what it does

Is this thrust washer also used with bolt-on aluminum cam gears, or just pressed-on gears?

Thanks! Dave

Master Parts Catalog identifies it as "spring (camshaft thrust), P/N 8N 6276, used on ALL front mount distributor engines (39-50)."
Neither this site nor don b have it listed as available, but either might be able to supply it if asked.

Sounds like the camshaft thrust washer from the engine's front cover.
