I'm trying out AOL for the first time. Any of you guys have AOL and do you like it?

I'm not sure whether to keep it or not. It's expensive compared to other types of dial up.

Thanks,
Johnny

We had AOL from 1996 to 2003. We then switched to SBC Yahoo DSL. The AOL was dial up, and it was SLOOOOW. Took a good couple of minutes to sign on, and websites took forever to load. JMHO.

Go to Walmart and pick up a free CD in the tapes department to install their ISP. I think it is $10.95 a month. I use Bluelight which is K Mart and Net Zero. Works OK but I am too lazy to try others.

AOL = a bigger virus than Windows. in reply to Johnny Fitzpatrick, 07-27-2005 14:20:22
Top 3 worst softwares in history:
1. Blaster Virus
2. AOL
3. Windows

Pooh Bear

**********************************************

Is Windows a Virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:

1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.

5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus.

It's a bug. ----- ----- ----- ----- ---

If you are going with a dial-up then try Peoplepc otherwise use Comcast.net or Earthlink.net for cable.

I've used AOL a few different times over the past several years and they provide a decent service. The last time I tried it (as a temp fix for an ISP problem) I didn't have any problems connecting. The AOL software installs all sorts of junk on your system that may take months to find and uninstall.

They are fine if you don't have anything else available or if you like the services they provide, but I prefer a simple, no frills, plain ISP. Tried SW Bell (SBC) for awhile and their software was just as bad as the AOL junk. We now have wireless DSL and couldn't live without it.

If you start AOL, even for the free trial period, and plan to cancel, make sure you start a day or two before you need to. We have had mixed results with cancelling them twice. The first time was nearly impossible, this past time was pretty easy. AOL will try to get you to sign back on by mailing you offers or suggesting that they may be keeping emails for you. If you sign back on after cancelling (even accidentally), that constitutes permission to reactivate your account and you will be charged again until you cancel.

AOL may work OK for you, but it isn't for me. But then again I've been getting "online" since the mid 1980's when I was using an Atari 800 to access computer bulletin boards.

This topic has come up before! The main thing is: DON'T DO IT!! AOL=ALMOST ON LINE Other than the fact that they Censor Sites They Think You Should Not See, and Install Mucho SpyWare, and are Extremely Expensive And HARD TO ESCAPE FROM once they have your Credit Card #! Don't get me started on my Anti-AOL rant! Check out several of the sites that can be accessed by entering "ANTI-AOL Sites" into any good search-engine! Except the AOL search, of course!! AOL SUX!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !!! ;-(

Hey Johnny,

You will probably get as much complaint as support with your question. Having used various ISPs I find AOL is very user friendly but installs a tremendous amout of trash in your system and also "hijacks" certain applications. You may not want to use Realplayer or Windows Media Player. I might suggest to custom install AOL so you can choose what you do and do not want installed. Are you installing a DSL or dial-up?

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

I like it well enough. I have customers who use it and keep me on their buddy list so I get complaints if I try to switch. Tried MSN and hated it. I figure some of the cheaper services must have less features but don't know for sure.
