I was pressure washing my 8N and all of a suddent a hole appeared in the left side of the transmission housing.... Seriously, at first the red paint disappeared and an instant later there appeared to be a yellowish circle then a hole about 1 1/4 " in diameter appeared.... I surmise that someone drilled a hole and later bondo'd it up and painted it..... My question is, why would you cut a 11/4 inch hole in the side of the transmission case..... looking in I can see what appears to be the clutch return spring.....
Thanks Pat

Tractor traders will sometimes buy a Ford tractor and "mine" the valuable parts from it; then sell the tractor for "only $200 more than I paid." I bought a Sherman at a premium price that (I later learned) had been "mined" from a 641 Ford. I bought an 8N with a hole for the Sherman stick and, after I made the deal, saw the Sherman sitting in his barn. Mike-Iowa

I'd say thats what it is as my 41 9N has the Sherman transmission.

These guys are probably right, but once my Dad took an 8N to the shop for a stuck clutch and they drilled a 3/4" hole in the housing and popped the clutch loose. They then just put a rubber plug in the hole.

My guess is that at one time it had a Sherman aux. transmission in it.

Someone probably removed the Sherman transmission and plugged up the hole where the shifter lever came out of the housing. My neighbor's 51 8N has a hole in it where the Sherman was removed. He just left the hole open.
