Just picked up a 9N. On left side above starter are 3 raised pads. 1st two I can"t read the numbers, but the one closest to driver has a 62 on it. What does this mean?? Thanks

Here's where it will be on a stock N engine.

Ocasionally people run into rebuilds/remans, or industrial engines that don't have the regular numbering.. etc.

If this leaves you stumped.. take a pic and post it for help in identifying it.

Soundguy: Between the looks like 2 rivets,where the A291 is in picture, I have J 37. No 8N below just a "D".

railroad..... ....the number between the "rivets" are the "casting date" and NOT the serial number. I would interpert yer casting date as Sept 3, 1947. "J" is the 9th month (no "I" month) The serial number is on the 1x4 flat spot under the cylinderhead gasket as indicated. All 9N's and 2N's engine s/n start 9N. It should be intuitive obvious that only 8N engines have 8N cast into the block..... ...respectfully, Dell
