Took mine into a tractor repair/parts house to see why mine was doing the same thing. I burned up two coils in a two year period and was using the ballast resister (one of the coils was a 12 volt). The old Ford mechanic told me to install an additional resister in series with the existing 'ballast' resister in order to limit current flow. This was even tho I was using a 12 volt coil on a 12 volt system. I did so about 6 months ago and have had no trouble starting on the first turn of the starter ever since. It's probably the cheapest insurance policy you can buy. JMHO...Ron

Puller..... ...many miss-guided shadetree mechanics "by-pass" the "infamous ballast resistor" for "HOTTER-SPARKIES" in an ill-informed belief that the reason they can't start their squarecan 4-nipple frontmount N-engine is it needs hotter sparkies. WRONG!!!

A NEW squarecan ignition coil will run for couple of hours before it melts its internal insulative tars and shorts out its windings and causes weak sparkies. Normally, an overnite cooldown will solidifiy the insulative tars and return the sparkies for about another 1-hr of running time.

Bottom line, the squarecan frontmount ignition coil requires the "infamous ballast resistor" or it DIES. The ballast resistor is mounted on top of a 3-terminal "T-block" under the ampmeter..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Is it 6 or 12 volt? If it is 6 volt system exactly what Old said. If it is a 12 volt system then you may need to add an additional resistor based on your setup.
