Since there are lots of older people and middle age people in here,I would like to hear from you about sleeping habits. My sleep has always been hard to come by.I often go to bed at 11pm and sometimes go to sleep as late as 3am.Often getting back up twice to watch tv or read. Some arthritis but not too bad.No caffien at night. No naps at daytime.Got worse with age.Do you guys sleep soundly or roll and tumble.I have read there are 50 million people not getting enough sleep.Whats the answer:Good Night....R.M. I have arthritis and one the things I take is amytriptyline, 10 or 20mg. It relaxes you so you sleep better. The tenseness from aching disturbs your sleep and the lack of sleep makes you tense. It helps break the cycle. It's trade name is Elavil.

Well... I'm 54 and been a light sleeper pretty much my whole life. Injured my back pretty good about 5 years ago and have be using codeine ever since. Restless leg syndrome also an issue. I exercise regularly, see a registered massage therapist every 2 weeks and occasionally overindulge in 12 year old scotch. What does help me sleep is fresh air and seat time. My advice for the aging and the arthritic... keep moving.

Cheers,Erik

I have had a sleep problem since I was about 16. Just lay there awake and toss and turn. Have taken speeping pills for the last 30 years. The sleep clinic said I had restless leg syndrome. Got some pills for it and they work pretty good.James

Wife has that restless leg syndrome. I used to be laying there asleep and she would just kick me. She would never wake up but I would every time she kicked. Finally had to start sleeping in another bed. She now takes a new medicine called paracopa that works real well for her.

Go to bed at 3:00 am get up at 9:00 am can`t sleep anymore. Usually wake up at least twice during the night. Guess I`m lucky after reading about you other folks. Spend a lot of time on the comp. By the way am 68 maybe that has something to do with it. Anyway good luck to all of you, they say better days are coming. Bye all.-Bill

I am 51 years old and after 35 years in construction, I have bad knees and back. Always have problems with my hands going numb. It sucks getting old. I had the same problem with my sleeping until six months ago. Finally went to have a sleep study done. I had been a terrible snorer most of my life. Always blamed it on being a smoker and being a little overweight. My wife kept bugging me to go to the Drs. because in addition to snoring, she claimed I also stopped breathing. They hooked me up to this machine with at least 40 wires, closed the door and told me to relax and go to sleep. Within 1 hr. they came in and told me I stopped breathing at least 5 times. They then hooked me up to this mask that forces air through you nose and keeps your air passages open. After that, the Dr, sent me to get my own machine. That was on January 5 and I have slept like a baby ever since. It takes a little getting used to, but it is well worth it. No more waking up in the middle of the night go back to bed at 3, then have to get up at 4:30 to go to work no more morning headaches ,no more feeling like s**t all day, no more snoring. It’s called sleep apnea and I would highly suggest that you get checked out. I am fortunate that I have good insurance that covered the machine. Hope this helped.

I have had a CPAP machine for almost 10 years. The masks now are so much more comfortable than when I first got the machine. I call it "hooking up to the mother ship". I have only been without it one night in all that time. Bad head cold had me stopped up.

Ditto everything you said. I never snored and sleept on my side but horrible headaches the next morning. Still stopped breathing a number of times on the study. I have a brother in a nursing home who had Apnea and went to sleep in a coma for 45 days. Affected his motor skills and now can't walk and wheel chair bound. Not something to fool around with. Now, I too sleep well. I have to use the "nose pillows". Bridge of the nose is too narrow to seal with a mask. I'll now sleep sound from 11-5:30. Can't get more than 7 hours sleep.

Also have a back problem that affects my sleep. Got one of those swedish foam type matresses and sleep a lot better.

Another CPAP user here.
Been using the machine for about 3 years.
I can't sleep without it now.
When wife has trouble waking me up she turns my machine off.
That always wakes me right up.
My snoring used to be legendary. Not a peep now.
The sleep center said I was the loudest snorer they had ever heard.
I also had the surgery to open my airways.
Took a lot of getting used to with the machine.
But now that I have it I really like it.
Wife got tested recently and got a machine of her own.

Sleep apnea is very dangerous stuff.
If there is even a chance you mite need it you should get tested.

Ditto with the Tempur pedic foam mattress. I had back surgery at 18 now many years later with 3 more herniated discs sleeping was horrible. I have literally spent over $5,000 on different mattresses. Ive had
waterbed
conventional matress
Air pump bed .....and then finally
the Swedish Foam one.

I've had it about 4 years now and its great. It has sagged a little where you lay but it is still comfortable. alot of years the Doc said I had to wear wrist splints to keep my hands from going numb. They sent me for the sleep study once too but the geniuses at the hospital had the sleep clinic right beside the heliport....didnt make it easy to sleep thats for sure

I went through a problem too with a wrist and wore a splint for a while. My wife had carpal tunnel and wore a splint and it went away. I think as you get older, the circulation problems kick in with the wrist. I try to sleep with that wrist over a pillow so I don't get it bent up too bad.

Only time I sleep well is after I've had a 6 pack or maybe a couple more. But I do have a bad back, knees and shoulder. I'm one of these people that roll over more then anything else when in bed. Most nights I'm on the computer till after midnight and if I'm lucky I get to sleep by 1 or so.

I wonder what has happened to our environment that has made "sleep apnea" such a common ailment when it had never existed/been noticed before the 1970's? Human medical studies have been around for centuries yet no one has previously noticed? I have a hard time believing it's not a new disease.
