Mostly because it won't start at the moment and it would always start in the past...eventually. Everything is clean and bright and the battery is charged. It has gas and it is on. Most of my problems in the past have stemmed from those areas. After running all the drills I decided it was finally time to pull the (Champion H12) plugs and have a look. I don't have the actual cylinder numbers handy so let me just say that three plugs looked the same. Dark blackish gray with a carbon coating on the inside parts and they were dry. The second cylinder in from the back was a different story. It was wet and smelled of gas. The fluid on it was blackish so it was either gas/carbon or maybe some dirty oil residue was up in there. Tractor has been lacking in power since I rebuilt the carb and I have been having a lot of trouble setting my main jet due to an inability to get a load on the engine. I'll confess.....I cannot load the engine by holding the good brake down because it doesn't have a good brake. Putting an implement on the back is problematic because a fairly severe hydraulic leak from the pin that holds the lift arm on the exhaust side keeps dripping on the hot exhaust (smoke, smoke, smoke) and the pump no longer wants to lift....probably because it is low on fluid now. I am just spinning my wheels here guys. Where would you start with this monster and what do you think the deal is with that second cylinder?

Might not be firing on that cylinder. Make it start with a 12v jump and starter fluid and all three carb screws adjusted out 1-turn. Short that one plug wire with a screw driver laid on it to ground and if it doesn"t change the idle then it is not firing. Compare by shorting out one of the other plug wires and notice the difference. If you can"t tell then pull another wire clear off and then short that wet plug, or remove it too.
Anyway, pull that plug wire and watch the spark as you key-on crank the engine. If you can"t get a regular, strong spark 8 to 10 times in a row with no miss then it isn"t working right. Bend the plug wire and replace it if it show surface cracks. Check the points gap and if it has moved then get a new screw to hold them in place. Check the plug gap. Swap the plugs around to see it the problem moves and if it does then the plug is bad.
That should get you headed in the right direction.
Adjust your brakes. You don"t want to tighten that pin then bend a piece of sheet metal to put under the bolt to divert the drip off the tail pipe. It won"t take much, maybe even some creative wire bending around the bolt and off to the side. Never tried either way, just brainstorming. Either way, fix it one day.

Hi Rob! Been a couple of months since my carb adventure! Just a stupid question....the tractor is 6 volt (which I forgot to mention). I can't use a 12 volt jump on that can I? About the leak and the brakes.....both are on the agenda but I really don't know what to fix first at this point.
This tractor has me chasing my tail at the moment.
I can keep adding hydraulic fluid or I can fix the leak. I can fix the brakes or not fix the brakes. Will it start or won't it. The electrical system is more of a joke than you can imagine. Etc, etc, etc.....

Where is the priority here?

Did I mention that the guy who gave me this mess in lieu of paying my bill (which he said he couldn't afford) put on a multi thousand dollar fireworks display on the 4th in his yard? You had to see it to believe it. I am dead certain one of those boomers spelled out "SUCKER!" in glittery lights as it exploded over my roof.

Sure you can jump 12v. Just go right to the starter post so you don"t put 12 on anything else. Don"t crank more than 30sec before you give it some cool down; 2 or 4 minutes. Turn on the key to put 6v to the ignition and zap that 12v to the starter. Makes triple sure it"s out of gear. Better yet jump the starter post, climb into the seat, and then ground the other cable; if it starts in gear then you"ll be in the driver"s seat.
That carb might be fine and the brakes might just need some adjust. I think you should work on the plugs first. It"s always better if it starts and runs ok. Too bad about that fireworks thing. Get it running, sell it for what you can get, and take a loss on your taxes against what that fella owned you. Then, if you want another tractor you"ll know something about what to look for and what it"s worth.

I have to laugh on two counts! I already have three tractors because I cut and sell hay as a side line. The other chuckle is because the money the guy owed me was for doing HIS taxes! I didn't lose anything on the deal. He gave me $800 cash along with the tractor and a REALLY nice brush hog. I sort of like to kid about taking the tractor in trade. I did a lot of work for the guy but it was still a fair trade. Thanks for the input! I am going to drag this thing up on the driveway and start puttering.

I thought that was curious. I remembered someone getting an N fobbed off for services rendered but I didn"t remember that being 6N"s Short.

So you like your N, huh?

Sucker.

Have fun with it.
