You guys helped me fix the distributor, so the engine now starts A-OK. Still can"t use this old tractor yet.

When I step on the clutch pedal, it feels like there is very little spring pressure. I can shift into all the gears when the engine is not running, but they grind if it is running. I"ve been reading about how to fix a stuck clutch. I"ve had a block of wood holding the pedal down for a couple of months, have put it in gear as soon as it starts and drive around several times, standing on the clutch pedal & bouncing it up and down.

I"ve used the front end loader bucket to dig up the driveway until it stalled the tractor out a few times (not comfortable with running into a tree). When I take the starter off & look in the hole, I don"t see anything that I should try to pry loose.

Do any of you have a photo of what the pressue plate should look like, looking through the starter hole? Is that the best thing, short of splitting the tractor apart at this point? It will be a real bear trying to take off the front end loader framework and split it.

Is the lack of spring pressure typical of a stuck clutch?

Thanks guys. Great forum.

oh dad,

It bothers me when you say it does not feel like there is much spring tension when you push the clutch pedal. If it were just a stuck clutch the pedal should feel normal. With this the pressure plate releases off the clutch disk but because the disk is welded to the flywheel with rust or other bad things the clutch does not release.

In your case it may well be something else. How much free travel is there in the clutch pedal before before it meets any resistance? It could be the bushings in the transmission that the clutch rod goes through are worn enough that there is not enough travel to release the clutch. Try adjusting the clutch linkage in and see if that takes up some of the free travel and allows the clutch to release.

Let us know.

Also to answer your question the clutch and pressure plate is on the rear of the flywheel and you will not be able to see it from the starter hole. Only way to see it is to split the tractor.

I can use my hand to depress the clutch to put the block of wood above it. It's pretty floppy. There is quite a bit of wear on the lever that is attached to the shaft that goes into the transmission. Should I raise the bolt quite a bit so that the lever moves the shaft farther? I read a lot about adjusting a clevis. It looks like I have about a half inch of threads to play with on the clevis, but that seems to go to a linkage attached to the breaks.

I took a photo of the clutch linkages if anyone would like an email so see how much wear is on the lever.

Thanks!

I had an 8N with a stuck clutch and I had tried all the remedies in the archives, short of splitting it. I finally removed the starter, took a can of carburetor cleaner, made a long nozzle out of plastic, bent it to reach behind the flywheel, blocked the clutch pedal down, sprayed the entire can on the disc and in an hour it was free.

Can you see the flywheel? I'm thinking that I should bend the hose to the left, and shoot it in all around the left side of the starter hole, behind the gears that the starter spins?

Thanks for your help.
