I am mostly just a reader on here and gosh only know how much I have learned from all the reading I have done. Lately I have seen several post about the tractor not starting. From all the responses I have seen, it is assumed that the engine will even turn over. Well I have had the head redone on my '41 9N, and after putting it all back together again, I changed all the plugs, as well as plug wires. I put a new resister in it, and have an almost new battery that indicates from the charger that it is fully charged. I tested all the wiring from the battery to the ignition, have power on all 4 (?) 5 connections on the ignition switch, but it still won't even so much as click, nor even attempt to turn over. I have power to the starter, took out the starter push button, cleaned that all up and I am pretty sure it is making contact, at least it was before I redid the head. I'm not sure where to go from here. Since it won't even turn over, I can't tell if there is any spark at the plugs. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

Gentleman, Thanks so much for your replies. To begin with, I am positive I have at least 4 wires coming out of the iginition switch. Where they all go to, I'm not sure about. I checked that again and yup, there's 4 wires comin out. I am Very safty conscious when working around any equipment, but a good reminder never hurt any body. I definitely get no click nor any thing else when I turn the ignition switch although there is definitely power there. I will take all of your good sound advice and will keep on working on it. If all else fails, I will load it up and take it to the tractor repair yard. It might cost some pretty good $$$$$, but I will at least have it running. Thanks again my good Friends. I will let you know. Olde Sarge

Sarge..... ...when you say you don't gitta "click" when you turn yer ignition switch and you're certain that you have 4-wires comming from yer ignition switch ...then... your 9N AIN'T STANDARD. And iff'n you can't tell us beforehand that yer tractor ain't standard, then we always give advice bases on 6v factory ORIGINAL. I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife of 32yrs.

Yer definations imply that you have an starter solenoid (no click) and the 4-wires operate BOTH the starter solenoid and power the ignition coil. Both of these NON-STANDARD are indicative of a 12v conversion with an alternator. The 9N came from the factory with a 6v-genny. 12v on a 6v-starter motor really spins the engine for eazier quicker starts ...but... 12v should start yer tractor in less than 10-sec of spinning. Iff'n you have to OVER-CRANK yer 6v starter motor with 12v, there is a possibility that you'll melt the starter motor guttz.

Generally, the 6v-starter motor doesn't care iff'n its quickly hit with 12v just as long as its a short crank. LONG-CRANKS (over 1-minute continious) are the problem. And yes, you can use a 12v battery for jumper starts, direct to the starter stud as previously instructed, tranny in NEUTRAL..... ...respectfully, Dell

Welcome Sarge..... ....you scare me when you talk about 4-5 wires on yer ignition switch. The OEM 9N ignition switch is a 2-wire device.

Tell me how you know you have power to the starter? The OEM 9N has a "jiggle-stick" remotely operated safety interlocked starter switch. The thumb starter switch pushes a "relay-rod" (jiggle-stick) that operates the starter switch under yer battery box. Iff'n you took out the jiggle-stick, theres a possibility that you didn't re-install it correctly. And of course, theres the strong posibility that the guttz of the real 9N starter switch done went Tango Uniform.

Have you tried a "jump-start" direct to the starter motor "stud"? Iff'n starter motor is "bad" yer motor won't turn, iff'n motor is good, it should spinn away. Make certain yer tranny is in NEUTRAL before you try a starter motor jump start..... ....Dell

And did I tell you to make certain yer tranny is in NEUTRAL before you try a starter motor jump start?

Sarge, are you getting a click or any indication of the starter getting some juice?

Rat bit my wire to the starter button in two and I didn't catch it until I had needlessly replaced the button. Ran a new wire and cranked right up. Hang in there and I am sure someone will pop in and tell you how to step through it more logically than I could.
