I have had many Fords.... all of them side mount distributors. My '39 has, of course, a front mount and this is my 1st experience with it.

I do not have a spark. This is an all new distributor. I have good voltage to the coil. I set the points to spec... gap .015. I have tried a coil off my parts 9N. But no spark.

At one point, I noticed that the small contact at the inside edge of the coil was bent and not making contact with the cap. Fixed that.... I think :-). Not sure how to tell if it is making contact.

I have a visual spark indicator that lights up orange when a spark happens. I made a spark plug so I can see the actual tip spark. Nothing.

What trouble shooting techniques should I use to figure this out?

Thanks in advance!
Patrick

HI, this is a tip from archives Kelly Jewell. Helped me a lot.

Remove the cap. Bump over engine until points are closed. Remove the coil wire from the distributor cap and hold it close to engine block.
Using a small screwdriver open and close the points not touching anything except the point arm. If the points and wiring are good then, each time you open the points you should get a spark. If you don't get a spark, use the screwdriver to arc between the points, if this gets fire to the coil wire then the points are bad. If still no fire then problem is further up the system wiring, coil something else. I had a brand new set of points that weren't firing out a new holland tune up pack. Got some from NAPA, perfect. Don't know for sure if it was that or if I burnt them messing with it, decided it wasn't worth trying to clean them. Points are cheap.

To be sure that there is no shorted insulators or an open set of points you should turn the engine by hand while observing the volt meter. If the volt meter does not fluctuate between high and low voltage when the points open and close you got trouble with the points or a grounding problem. If the voltage is constantly low it is something shorted and if it is constantly high the points are not making up or the coil is not making up the the points conductor.

The screw holding the points might have slipped. I've had this happen before. The little pig tail needs to be touching the screw head. Might have to stretch it a little. I actually put mine back together once and left the rotor button lying on the work bench. You can get a short in there too. There are better people on here than me to talk about that.
