8N brake drum removal

I'm trying to replace brake shoes, etc., on my 1952 8N. I have the wheels off, but can't budge the 4 flat-head screws that hold each brake drum cover on. Have tried penetrating oil, some heat with a Mapp gas torch, custom-ground homemade humongous screwdriver, impact driver. Any hints? Do I have to drill them out and get new ones?

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints.

I take my cold chisel and place the corner of it in the slot out on the end at an angle and beat the screw CCW. It will move and you still have plenty of good slot for that big screw driver. You can work both ends of the slot with that chisel but you probably won"t have to.

Impact driver got most of mine. I hammered on that driver a couple of hours on one. I then took a pretty good sized punch and got right out on the end and whacked it one time and the last two came off.

Dan has hit the nail on the head. I had to drill out the ones on my 53 Jubilee project tractor.

It's not too difficult and, as Dan said, you don't really need the screws to hold the drum on; the rear wheels will do that for you.

Good luck with it.

Rick

When all else fails - drilling them out works 100% of the time. BUT... after copious amounts of penetrating oil and heat, take a cold chisel on one side of the slot for the screwdriver and smack it in a couter-clockwise (unscrewing) direction. Remember - get on the edge of the slot towards the end. Many have been very successful getting these stubborn bolts off this way.

BTW - you don't need them during re-assembly unless you just like the looks. The wheel whill hold this drum in place when it is torqued up to the hub.

Good luck,
Dan
