8N with frt mount dist. quit. I first thought fuel problem but now believe ignition. How do I check if ignition is producing a spark?

Pull a plug wire off and hold it inyour hand.. turn key on.. hit starter button.. you will immediatly know if it is producing spark!

Actually.. a spare spark plug hooked into the wire and held with threads grounded may be a little less surprising.

Got fuel flow thru carb? Check bowl drain.

Pull off a plug wire and attach it to an old plug and ground the plug against the motor and see if you got one when it cranks over. Should be a nice blue spark at the plug tip.

I wouldn't suggest my dad's old method of just holding on to the wire. His favorote past time was grabbing me when he was checking for a spark. If I screamed loud enough, good spark.

Thanks for the tip. I forgot to mention that I pulled the first cylinder (from the front) plug wire out of the dist cap and the metal end was missing and the wire end was black. is this an indicator for bad coil or anything?

PKJ..... ...the "black" end of yer sparkie wire inside yer 4-nipple crabcap is dead-givaway that you are using modern anti-radiostatic carbon core sparkie wire. Causes misses and weak sparkies. DO NOT USE CARBON-CORE sparkie wire. Understand? Use ONLY copper-core sparkie wire. New 4-cylinder copper-core sparkie wire kit $10, cheap. You will haffta cut-to-fit the sparkie wire length and pass the end of the little multi-strand copper-core wire thru the metal sleeve that is clamped to the end of the sparkie wire that fitts innna the 4-nipple.

15 yrs ago, I bought a set of Pontiac V-8 hot-rod copper core sparkie wires for the moulded "L" sparkie boot. Still have 4-wires and my original "hot-rod" sparkie wires are soft and flexable and don't cause a miss..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

You might have pulled the end off and left it in the cap. If it's in there that way without one , that's a no no.

no metal cap in dist cap. Hole in dist cap is black as well. Is it possible metal was burned away or someone just stuck the wire in that way?

Someone could have dropped it and just stuck it in that way. But, that tractor will crank and run without one hitting. I crossed my wires before and the tractor would crank right up. It just wouldn't pull it's on weight across the yard. Not having one end isn't your problem but I would fix it. Could it have fallen off when you pulled the wire and is around there on the ground?

If you have spark after checking it, I would start looking at fuel issues. See if you are getting fuel down to the carb. Pull the line at the elbow on the carb. Should have a good steady stream. No stream, then back up to the strainer above the bowl. There is also a strainer in the elbow on the carb itself as well as one in the bottom of the fuel tank. The one in the tank is less likely to be a problem.

Check also to make sure you have plenty of fuel in the tank. You need to open the fuel knob all the way up. If just open a couple of rounds, you could be just low of fuel. You can look in the tank and see fuel and think "it's low but there's some there". There's a little reserve in there if only open 2 rounds. Has to be all the way open to get that last bit of fuel.
