I just moved into a home 2 years ago which has a septic tank instead of county sewer system. No problems yet, but not absolutely sure if I should use "Rid-X" or something similar in the future. Everyone has a different opinion. Any of you with septic tanks have any experiences you'd like to share either with Rid-X or without? Appreciate any info...Ron

When the system was installed, the health dept suggested it be pumped every 5 years or so. After reading all the post, I will probably go that route..Thanks for all the informative information. I think that I have learned that I can clean or not clean, use additives or not use additives and still the system (if properly installed) will work well for 2 older people. The real problem will occur when we have guests who do not understand the necessity of flushing only bodily wastes and bio-degradeable paper. In reality, we have no control over them or their habits of flushing anything that they wish to dispose ..thanks for all the posts. You"ve been a great help..Ron

My septic tank was put in 1964 and has never been touched. I use ridex every two to three months. There is a covered pit (grease trap) between tank and leach field that I clean with a clam type post hole digger every 4 to 5 years. This tank has serviced 6 people up until about 10 years ago. Now only three with automatic washer.

You shouldn't need to add anything to a properly working septic system.

Besides water and toilet paper,
if you didn't eat it, don't put it in the system.

I don't think Rid-X would hurt the system.
But I don't think it would help either.

An old trick is to get a gallon of whole milk,
let it sit out overnight and spoil,
then pour it down the toilet and flush it.
Supposed to introduce helpful enzymes into the tank.
Don't know that it really works. but can't hurt.

The best thing you can do for your system,
is to have it pumped out every few years.
Cheap insurance against a new system.

Controversial topic here.

The septic guy should have some additive that will get the juices flowing. If not, they have suggested to me that I add some yeast once a month as insurance. If you do some internet searching you will get lots of opinions but I took the guy"s advice and I now put yeast in once a month. You don"t want to put a lot in because a large yeast bloom will generate enough gas to bring solids up and potentially get them into the leach field. Sam"s Club has a packet of yeast that will last you about 2 years for somewhwere around $5.00. Lots cheaper than rid-x.

The pumper that I use suggests cleanout every 3 years for a family of 4. When I bought the house I had it pumped out and he told me it looked like it had never been done before. It was 11 years old at that point. Three years later I watched him again and I could see a dramatic difference in the ratio of liquids to solids. The wife and I are becoming empty nesters now and I"m sure we can back off a bit but in the mean time I am playing it safe. Pumping is a lot cheaper than replacing a drain field.

Best of luck

Was always told that the two things to mess up a septic system was grease and laundry lint. Septic man said 30 years ago that older septic systems were not designed for automatic clothes washers. They flood the settling tank if too many loads are done together;floating waste solids into the leach field. So limit daily loads of laundry if you have an older septic system.

The synthetic fibers from clothing used to be strained out in the older washing machine but newer machines flush it out with the washwater. Fibers do not breakdown unless in direct sunlite. He recommended putting a strainer bag on the discharge hose (cheap).

As for chemicals, he always said only mix yeast with spoiled milk products from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature and yeast begin to work before flushiing down the water closet. He claims the other chemicals work too good and break alot of grease and junk loose in the tank allowing it to flow into the leach field clogging it up (and thats bad news).

I am the only house left in neighborhood (built in the 1920's and '30s) that I know of that has not had to have their septic system replaced. I do have the tank pumped every 7-10 years.

Yeast and spoiled milk is cheap.

About every other month we use rid-x. Pour it down toliet and flush right before going to work.
We've lived here 7 years, 2 empty nest adults. Had tank pumped first time in June. The guy said it coulda waited a little more if we wanted. My ma had a septic tank for a bit over 20 years. Every other month she'd toss in some yeast. She had it pumped twice in those years. The last was just b/4 she moved and the guy said it really didn't need it. Buyers insisted it be pumped. I put Rid-X or equalvalent in the tank just before we leave on vacation for a week, haven't had any problems the last few years like we had before.

(Don`t) pur any type of grease down the drain or you will eventualy plug it up. Then you will be digging down to the cover and have to clean it out. Yuk Don`t ask me how I know. Just be sure what you flush or pour down the drain and rid-x won`t hurt at all.-Bill

One more thing that is very common to fouling up a tank.(Don`t flush any kind of sanitary napkins. They don`t break down and will eventualy cause it to plug up.

I only use Napkins at the dinner table. Seriously though, I had a sewer man tell me that he could tell who used Rid -X and who didn't. He highly recommends a dose of Rid-X once a month.

I don't know if this is much help to you, but I have a septic system that is almost 30 years old and have never used any additives or had it serviced or pumped out.

I think the main thing about septic systems is that if they are installed properly they are pretty much trouble free.

I might need to knock on wood:-).

You guys are always right on top of what ever I am going through!! Long story, short version, we will have to put in a system pretty soon as the local swer plant will shut down. Here in this part of Texas, can't put in the old septic system with laderal lines and what not,, have to use anaerobic (septic) system. Pretty cool system, the one we will get has three tanks, first one starts the breakdown and the water/liquid over flows into the second where more breakdown happens. Finally into the thrid that has a swimming pool clorine table in it.. When the water level gets high enough in that thrid tank, pump comes on and discharges the water. It can be used to water gardens, lawn what ever. Can not drink it, but won't hurt you if you get wet from it.

Not cheap, but shoot, I like the idea and since it doesn't have laderial lines, less ground usage. We are going to run our discharge lines to a set of sprinkers over in the side and some into the back yard.
