I WAS THINKING OF BUILDING A LOG SPLITTER BY PURCHASING A PTO DRIVEN LOG SPLITTTER PUMP FOR MY 8N, BUT I HAVE BEEN GIVEN A SMALL GAS DRIVEN 11HP ENGINE WHICH HAS A VERTICAL SHAFT. ALL THE LOG SPLITTERS I HAVE SEEN USE A HORIZONTAL SHAFT. CAN A VERTICAL SHAFT ENGINE BE USED ?

Your vertical shaft engine will work fine. A good many of the new splitters are built with those engines. I built a self contained splitter out of a 3pt model. I left the lift points on the splitter so I could more easily move it around and put a hitch on the front also. Been real happy with it.

A hydraulic pump should not be position-sensitive, and should work equally well with a horizontal or vertical shaft engine.
