I have a 1951 8n and the hyd will not work without the pto engaged. Is this right if so is there a way to change it . when I raise my bush hog the blade is spinning and is very dangerous. If I move the pto lever just a very little the blade will stop and the hyd will work a little bit

Ric..... ...yes, it is normal and semi-dangerious. Remember, the N-Tractor was invented "before" brush-hoggs ...and... the pto MUST be engaged to make the hydraulic pump pump. When I am "transporting" my brush-hogg down the road, I disconnect the brush-hoggs PTO shaft. That is why it has a "push-button". Remember to ALWAYS use an OverRunning Coupler on the PTO shaft to drive yer brush-hogg..... ....Dell, the self-appointed ORC safety preacher

N's and NAA have a single plate clutch from the factor giving them a non-live, tranny driven PTO. That menas to get pto.. the clutch has to engaged, engine running.. ( any gear or neutral is fine.. ) Same for the hyds, as the pto shaft passes thru the hydro belly pump and spins the pump as the pto shaft turns. Your explanation of being able to move the pto engage lever a bit and get hyds but not pto doesn't make sense.. It's a 1 piece pto shaft.. if the pump spins.. the shaft is spinning...

Very little you can do to change the non-live pto. in the arcives and pictures, I've seen 3 people with pseudo live pto. One uses a sherman add on that amounted to a hand clutch for the axle that for all intents and purposes gave you a '2-stage clutch setup'.

I've also seen pics of vintage custom non-oem factor production work done on the rear casting to make for live-ish pto. I've also seen a home brew modification by a private owner, that also allowed for a hand clutch on an axle.. etc.

For hyds,, yes. you can add on an aux engine mounted hyd pump and plumb it back into the system to give you live hyds like a NAA.

A fellow named zane sherman makes a kit called a 'live thang'. If you are the mechanicky type and have hyd parts on hand.. you can probably also cobble one up yourself.. your call.

Most of us simple use limit chains and use the chains to hold the hog in transport mode till we get where we are going.. or do other things like disconnect the pto shaft..e tc.. still.. live hyds are a nice addition.
