I recently bought back my grandpa's 9n tractor. It flipped over backwards by prior owner so all the fluids were low. I'm changing them all out and putting in new. the question I have is what would be the best fluid to put in the rearend. The tractor has a wood belly mower and won't be ran at all in the winter. thanks Marc

After a bad experience with some budget fluid, I use the New Holland 134 fluid exclusively. Last summer, I got some Coastal brand oil for about half the price, but while I was using it, after about an hour of working with an implement (brush hog or saw rig, in these cases) the hydraulic lift would stop working until things had cooled off. This spring I changed back to the New Holland fluid, and things run great.

Moral of the story - you get what you pay for

Originial specs called for 90w mineral oil; remember, the same fluid that works in the pump also goes in the rear end and transmission. The tractor has three drains & one filler plug (on top of the transmission) TSC Traveller brand GL-1 is thick, as is the NAPA 65-205 fluid. Both are fine for use in the N. A thinner oil is the mc-134d Ford/NH fluid. Drain from front to rear, starting w/ the pipe plug under the rear end. Remove one of the bottom bolts in the inspection plate w/ the dipstick; add fluid until it drips out of the bolt hole. That's enough fluid; any more will leak past the seals & get in the brakes. It's also a very good idea to remove both inspection plates & flush out the sludge in the pump base w/ kerosene.

90-weight GL-1 gear oil. About 4.5 gallons, if it's been completely drained, and is relatively free of lingering sludge.
