Perhaps your point attaching screws are nearly stripped, and not holding well, and the points sre slipping closed. They are a standard machine screw, and it shouldn't be too hard to find replacements. If you check the archives, there are MANY posts from Dell, giving a part number good at Ford car dealers, as well as CNH implement dealers. A "star" lockwasher works well to keep them tight, if the replacement screws are long enough. Be sure they are not TOO LONG, because if they protrude too far beyond the backside of the breaker plate the advance mechanism will whack them. If the wear block is really wearing off, it can be a sign of excessive heat, due to excessive primary ignition current, caused by a mis-match of system voltage, coil primary resistance, and ballast or dropping resistors. However, this usually doesn't go on too long before the coil fails. Take the distributor off, and look carefully at it's cam for any sign of rust or nicks. It should be possible to polish the cam up, if necessary, with crocus cloth without taking too much off, and affecting timing and dwell.
