Since I got my neighborhood mechanic to get my 2N started, I have been using the heck out of it, mainly to work on my road. It starts and runs great and I don't have to worry about mosquitos because of the cloud of smoke I spew everywhere I go! Now for my question; Can someone tell me what an engine rebuild would cost(on average), and is there anyone in the SE AZ area that does this kind of work???

When I was looking for a good machine shop for Rustbucket, I visited all the local mechanics in the area and told them what I had and what I needed. After three mechanics told me the same guy I looked him up. I took my 54 NAA block in without telling him what it was. As soon as he saw it he said - "that looks like an old Ford overhead valve engine - looks like it is off a tractor". SOLD! He was great - had a full machine shop behind his house, gave me more than I asked (or paid) for, and took pride in his work. Needless to say it was perfect. I pulled the main and rod bearing caps when I got it home and double checked it with Plasti-gauge - and the rods were .002 and the mains were .0015 - ok - he knew his stuff. My tractor started on the second revolution the first time after the rebuild!

Do some leg work - you will be glad you did.

Good luck,
Dan

Richard,
How far are you from Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca? About all one can do "cold" is to find a machine shop with someone over 50 working there. Over 60 is even better. Safford, Wilcox or Douglas probably have a couple shops each, also. HTH

Parts cost are the same every where; about $450 for the entire kit; sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, valves, etc. Shop work to turn the crank, hot tank the engine (you deliver) probably $100-$150. From that point on, it all depends on your mechanical skills. With a good manual & constant access to this board, you can do the rest. If not, figure $400-500 labor here in VA. Total cost, you pull the engine, $1100-1200 in VA; you do the work (except the shop work) $600. Of course, none of this covers unforeseen stuff, like a bad governor, cracked intake, etc. Add another $200 just because..... !! Forget all of the above if your wife asks the question; that being the case, engine rebuilds are $300, parts & labor. All guns cost less than $200..... .
