I got such great advice from this site about getting my Oliver crawler running I thought I’d ask about my next issue to the 8N experts.

I have a chance to by a reasonable 8N. Price is right, seems to run OK, nearby so delivery is not much of an issue. And besides it looks like a tractor should.

Primary purpose of this tractor is to mow about a mile and half of gravel road. First ˝ mile is farm road next to the corn which is often rutted, then road goes through the woods fro a while and ends up on a gravel bar in the river.

Q1 What type of mower works best. Brush hog, flail, other? There is dense brush on either side of this road, often a ditch on one side.

Q2 Is an “elderly” but in good shape 8N enough to run it?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I’m looking forward to having something without tracks although “olie” sure works good when it’s muddy.

Olie: I run a 5 ft. LMC Clipper 500 brush hog behind my '52 8N. I use it to cut about 10 acres of pasture at the old family farm and to cut the rough areas around my house. I also use to cut dense brush and small trees. If the front bumper will push it over, the brush hog will chew it up and spit it out. You just need to watch out for stumps!!! And yes, you really need an ORC. GA Jim

Oli...
I use a 5' flail mower. Love it, but it is better used as a finish mower, not for dense brush. It will shred dense stuff like a chipper/shredder, but will probably need a couple passes as it will bog down the N in the dense stuff. A nice feature on the flail mower, it doesn't throw rocks, cans, etc. like a B. hog will. A lot of State and County road crews around here use flail mowers for that very reason when mowing along roads.

Might want to use a 5' B. hog for the dense stuff. Your N should be able to pull it all day long, as long as it is in pretty good running order.

I have heard that the flail
mower does a great job. But requires more hp than the 8N
can deliver.
a 5' hog is about max for all
purpose.
Need a ORC....
Need 3 point to work good for ruts....
Need PTO to work well.....

Stay away from a King Kutter, they are garbage you swear was "Made in China". Also just be very careful and don't take chances. Good Luck.

I've been running the heavy duty King Cutter on my MF255 for several years and have absolutely no complaints with it. It is a 7 footer. Built heavy duty. Of course, I bushhog what used to be level hay fields and no Rocky Tops.:)

That's a fairly 'blanket' statement you made there.

I have a 5' KK that is 5 years old now. I pull it with my 8n or naa now.. but used to pull it up until last year with a NH 1920. The Nh 1920 and the NAA will handle a 6' hog fairly decently.. so the 5'hog was really getting a workout. It has mowed countless rocks, hidden lumber.. ant mounds galore.. shaved off the high spots where the road was rutted.. oh yeah.. cuts gras and brush too. Biggest stuff I've ever intentionally cut was 2" green.. makes alot of racket.. but cuts it fine.

Still on the oem set of blades that look just about new.. deck has 1 scratch in it.. NO rust.. gearbix is nice and tight.. no leaks... pto plastic shield is still working...

This is one of the old red ones, and has a 40hp gearbox.

Mine is a light yellowish looking the color of some of the Woods I have seen. They make a cheaper built unit too like most of them do. I've cut 2+ stuff on terraces, fire ant hills galore, hit a few big rocks that have been thrown by prior owner onto the terraces, and a few bad snakes.

I don't have a leak, good and tight, still got original blades, and plastic PTO cover in good shape, nothing bent and not even paint chipped. The thing about this is it has sat outside since I bought it. Getting ready to build it a house though along with the rest of the equipment. The 8N lives in the garage now.

I wouldn't hesitate on buying the HD model again.

I have a 5foot bush hog type mower and a 5foot finish mower.
My 8N pulls them both just fine (not at the same time).
I mow out along our road about a half mile.
Have to watch about those ditches.
Don't want to turn the thing over mowing county road.
These old tractors are perfect for mowing like this.

These ole N's were made to last, unlike things made today. I use a 6' Fred Kain finishing mower behind my 41 9N cutting my four acres, tractor and mowers been together now for 12 years and still going strong !!!!!
