Shifter problem

I have an early 1940 9N with an aluminum transmission top cover. It appears that the shifter has slipped or worn down and is lightly rubbing on the gear below it. Although it shifts ok, I can physically lift the shifter about 1/2 inch if I pull it against the spring. How is the shifter supposed to be held in place, and how do I fix it?

Dale

Dale -
I'm looking forward to the Pros From Dover answering this one 'cause I've got the same problem with my '39 9N.

John,
I think I have just fabricated a temporary fix. I cut and formed a small piece of 1/8" thick steel to fit into the worn area of the top cover. I just wrapped a cable tie around the area where the boot fits to hold the piece of metal in. So far it has lasted about 10 minutes. If it continues to work, perhaps I will clean it up good and add some JB Weld.

If it doesn't work, I think I will take the top cover off and have it welded to build up the worn area.

It is held in place by the spring and the two pins that are on the side of the shifter ball. The problem is the steel pins eventually wear the much softer aluminum and the shifter is pulled down by the spring and rubs on the gears. I have one that does the same thing. I don't know yet how I am going to fix it but it will probably involve JB Weld on the top cover where it is worn. The only time I notice it is when I push or winch the tractor with it in neutral.
