I am having problems with my starter. Hooked up the battery, turned the key, and it turned for about 4 seconds. Tried to apply power directly to starter, and nothing. Removed started, and it did turn sometimes, but the cables got extremely hot. Tried a new solenoid, but after reinstalling the started and solenoid, it turned for about 4 seconds, and stopped again. Cables again got extremely hot. Thoughts????

If you got those 12v 4ga cables on a 6v battery the cables will not get it done and they will overheat. You need good 2ga. ground and 1ga. hot cable. Short as possible. The posts and ground need to be clean, bright and tight.
Compare the cables to your 12v everyday ride. The 6v tractor cables should be much bigger diameter.

Hot cables mean you got lots of current flowing, so it's getting through the solenoid to somewhere. Starter turns for 4 seconds probably means you have an internal short in it caused by the heat. Also could be a bad bearing letting the armature drag and bind on the field coils. I'm betting on a bad starter - but I've also lost lots of bets in my lifetime. Good luck!

I'll bet on the starter bad. If it's getting hot with it off the tractor, I would agree that you got a short inside the starter or draggin badly.

I too have lost a few bets. Can't see the grounding issue though. You would have to really have a lot of crud on there to cause that kind of situation.

You got it in reply to Jack Allgood, 08-18-2005 20:23:12
Key here is that the cables heat up when the starter is off the tractor and not even turning the engine. Time to find a rebuild place.
