Is it time to clean/bright/tight or change things?

8N 6 volt frontmount has be losing a bit of power. I was going to change/check points. Yesterday, for the first time in forever it rained/misted all day. Tractor would not start- this is unheard of since I did the Dell's clean/bright/tight with starter ciruit.

Tester plug showed no spark.

Bypassed ignition switch- no joy. No spark.

Voltage at top of coil= 6volts and 1.65-9

Pulled distributer and everything is clean and dry. Points gap looks small and some wear. There was a bit of "electrical smell [grin] inside the distributer- but not burnt electrical smell.

Have to pull crab pots now, but will work on it this evening.

I'm thinking:

Voltage at coil is low (1.6). Time to clean connections at ballast resistor, etc to dist?

Then,

Should I clean/gap points or just throw in a new set of points and condenser while I have the distributor off?

Any thoughts or suggesations.

Many thanks in advance.

Pop: Top of coil voltage should be batt voltage with points open and about 3.5 with points closed -- don't think 1.6 will get it. Must be losing it somewhere -- suggest clean, tight, bright first, then look for real skinny wire or bad insulation with the wet draining off the volts somewhere in there if you're sure it's not the ignition switch. Gotta get the volts to the coil before you start throwing parts at it. Then if it won't go, do the new points and condenser trick.

Pop..... ...I'm with Bill, yer loosin' yer volts to yer coil somewheres causin weak sparkies. And while you could change yer frontmount points (it won't hurt) I don't think that is yer problem. Yer reading battery volts with the points OPEN, that is correct. Should read about 3-3.5 volts with the points closed, yer readin' 1.6v, that way too low. While it could be yer "infamous ballast resistor" and its connections, I'd be more inclined to suspect yer weaksister ignition switch ($10, cheap) guttz are burned and causing volts loss BEFORE they even gitt to yer ballast resistor. Eazy check, read the volts at the 2-terminals that go TO the ignition switch with the points closed ...or... by-pass the switch terminals at the circuit board that holds the ballast resistor with a jumper wire and alligator clippies. Probably be simpler just to "trust-me" and change yer ignition switch..... ...Dell
