Hi All,

I know many of you have equipment trailers you haul your tractors and such on. I am casually looking for an equipment trailer to use occasionally.

I came across one for sale yesterday that looked home made with two mobile home axles (probably about a 6ft X 14ft not including the tongue).

I was wondering how well the mobile home axles hold up over time. Do they all have electric brakes? It seems they are built to haul the mobile home to a destination to be parked and that is about it.

Any advice or recommendations appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

I know that here in FL.. FDOT won't let you use MH axles to build ho-made trailers any more.

I guess if you swapped the hubs and tires.. no one would know though?

Rick, Hubs are available to convert to allow you to put regular wheels on..it comes with the hub bearings, seals, dust cap and wheel studs..replaces the entire hub..they run about $40 for no brakes to about $80 with brakes..they are available in 6 hole or 8 hole patterns..I put 4 of the 8 holes on a 20 ft. gooseneck I built..work great and nobody will ever know it has trailer house axles under it..

I"m sure mobile home axles would be fine for a trailer.
But..... .
The person to ask this question to is your insurance agent.
Ask him about having an accident involving a home made trailer.
Mite want to have 911 on speed dial for when he keels over.

I've used these axles with no problems. I have a trailer right now that I cut the cheap brakes off and replaced with a complete new brake system and replaced the tires that say 'mobile home use only' with new tires. I've been told that if caught with a trailer with this on the tire I could get a heavy fine.

Thanks for all the comments. The trailer I looked at was in someones front yard a few miles from my house with a for-sale sign and a telephone # on it. It had a price of $800 on the sign. I have not talked to the owner yet as I wanted to get more information about the mobile home axles.

It seems like someone recently told me that you have to get some kind of mobile home axle permit or stamp from the DOT to get a tag for such a trailer.

Since I would probably not use it but a few times a year I don't want to pay a lot of money but I don't want to buy something I can't legally use either.

Thanks again,

Rick

One thing you need to know is that the 16.5 mobile home tires require 60 PSI air pressure.

I have built several utility trailers from mobile home axle components and have had good luck with them. I do hear that they are not legal on the Interstate highways but cannot confirm it. I have used mine many times on the Interstate and had no problems. The electric brakes are very crude and don"t last long. They are acuated by a magnet grabbing the drum and the varied friction according to the amperage applied lets the magnet pull a lever that applies the brakes. Everything wears fast and gets hot if used much. Will work though for a while and may be repaired fairly cheap.

Probably the reason some have experianced the tire coming off the rim when making tight turns is because of under inflation.

Been there done that!

Zane ...i have never seen a tire that was 16.5 for a mobilehome, bet it was a typo,,,all or most all are 14.5 and all have been marked on the tire "NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE" ...if you are pulled over and the trooper knows what he is doing,it can cost plenty...voice of experience.....mike btw...don`t ask

I think you are right on the tire size being 14.5 and not 16.5???? My computer of the brain must have hit the wrong key?????

Yes they are imbossed with the message "not for highway use" I think I'll tell the patrolman I can't read????? Think he will fall for it?

I just made a 6.5"x 10" trailer out of a mobile home axle. Replaced the hubs with a six bolt hub so I could put regular wheels on it, bought 3500# springs to replace the mobile home springs. It pulls real good. I would not be affraid to use it for heavy duty hauling everyday if need be. I"ve borrowed many with mobile home axles and wheels, never had any problems. I have seen alot of factory made trailers broke down on the road with broken axles or spindles though. I don"t like the mobile home tire because they are so stiff, but as far a trusting one with a heavy load, I"d use a weather checked old mobile home tire over a standard tire anyday.

I've borrowed a tandem axle trailer with mobile home axles a few times to haul a car or tractor. I think they're fine if it's something you need only occasionally. So far I've had a tire come off the rim a couple of times but have always been able to pop it back on the bead. I think only a mobile home tire will fit.

Old is right. These axles are reused again and again but they're rebuilt often. You should be able to make a standard axle fairly cheap out of 2" team pipe if the trailer is a bargain otherwise and you want to change the axles.

I think that trailers made from mobile home axles and wheels are no longer legal in some states. I would check before I invested one dime in such a trailer. Used to see them a lot, but seldom seem them now in Iowa. Mike-Iowa

I have a 3 axle equipment trailer and it was made with mobile home axles. It was originally built to haul a John Deere 350 crawler/loader. Has electric brakes on the front two axles which currently don't work and will need serious replacement. But I have had it for 25+ years and it has held up well. I have hauled tractors and misc equipment from GA to FL to NC and various other places with no complaints. If you do use them, get a good lug wrench and get in the habit of checking the lugnuts every 100 or so miles. They can work loose. I have never seen hubs that would go on them to let me use regular bolt on wheels. I checked at Northern and they did not have them.

Theres been a lot said about them on the forurms before. Some pros some cons.
Since I moved mobile homes for a living a few years ago here one most people don't know, now day the axles are reused. They set up the home pull the axles and they go under a new one. A lot of them have brakes but most of the time they don't work. You can buy hubs that will make them ok for what you want but with out those hubs I wouldn't try it. With the hubs you can put normal 15 or 16 inch tires on and then they work well.

I was told by a respected trailer shop in our area that the axles with weld on backing plates were the light duty mobile home axles, but the version with a flange welded on and a normal bolt on backing plate is a full commercial axle, normally either 5000, or 6000# rating. I know I ended up buying a tandem for my min ex with these axles, with the bolt on plates, and it was a large trailer business that built it (still in business today, trailer is abour 12 years old). I've had no problems with tires, parts, or inspections/safeties at all, local tire shop carries tires in stock at all times.
