Well here it goes.

I bought a 42 2N 6V this summer. Everything ran great. She started with just a touch on the starter. But the ammeter didn't work so I put in new one. I followed every wiring diagram and have it wired perfectly. (Problem #1) But it reads -10 when the lights are on and -2 when off. Since then the tractor has ran like crap. (Problem #2) The last owner had cut the wire that runs from the Battery/Generator cutout relay to the resistor block, the reason, I found, is because when connected it melts instantly. So I have left that wire out. I replaced points, plugs, condenser, wiring (except the wire from the cutout relay to the resistor) and I even replaced the coil. The timing is right on by the book. The other night the tractor finally ran but after a while I lost power and barely got her back to the garage. I checked fuel to the carb (good), carb adjustments (by the book), and replaced points, condenser, rotor, and put the old coil back in and finally had some blue spark. (Problem #3) I started her up but she sounded bad, so I checked carb adjustments and she died and sent some smoke out the oil cap. Now I can't get her to start. What is wrong here.

I think you have basically just told us that with your key on you see -2 on the ammeter.. and with lamps on.. you see -10 on ampmeter.. and also that the wire from the genny cutout relay to the ressitor block has been cut, and that it used to run good now doesn't. Guress what. your battery is doing all the work.. and it's low.. that's why you are reading -2 / -10 on the gauge. Tjhat wire from the cutout? it is to CHARGE the battery... but it can't.. because it is CUT. It's CUT cause' the prev owner was too cheap to put a 15$ cutout relay on it and polarize it. ( might also be a bag genny too.. don't know till you test it.. and/or replace the relay. ). TSC has those cutout relays.. remember to polarize by jumpering around it's 2 terminals after you hook it up and have it mounted/grounded good.

Well, problem one is not a problem. Your ammeter might be 2amps off but when you turn on the lights they draw amps the ammeter will show a discharge. Check that 2amp situation by removing either wire from the ammeter to see if it settles on zero. If it still shows -2 then if just reads wrong. If it does settle back to zero then you have a short in there somewhere, besides the short in the genny or cutout. Follow the wire out and disconnect it to see if the ammeter settles back to zero. If you follow the wire out, disconnecting here and there, and the ammeter settles to zero and then you disconnect one and it doesn"t not settle back to zero then you just jumped over the short to ground so fix it.
Back to the cutout; remove the wire to the generator. Then take a wire from the resister block and brush the cutout terminal and if it sparks the cutout is shorted to ground. Take off the cutout and figure out why. If it doesn"t short then connect the wire from the resister block to the cutout. Then disconnect the wire on the genny and brush the other end of the wire to the cutout terminal and if it sparks fix the wire. If it doesn"t spark then connect it to the cutout. Then brush the other end on the genny post. If it sparks the genny is shorted. You may have bad brushes or something else going on in there.
I am selling a 3-brush genny and a voltage regulator you can replace that genny and cutout.

Well, your ammeter is reading correctly as Rob has said. The fact that it is showing a discharge with lights off is because your generator is not hooked up! Like running your car with no alternator, the juice has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is your battery. The 9N and 2N came with a cutout relay instead of a voltage regulator. This is the big round can thingy just above the starter switch on the backside of the steering column. The battery wire that goes from the cutout to the terminal resistor block should be on the TOP terminal of the cutout and the generator wire should be on the bottom. Additionally, the relay it self should be grounded through it's mounting bolts.

if the problem really is in your generator, you can have the generator rebuilt for about $35. MUCH cheaper than a "who-knows-what-the-last-guy-did" 12V conversion and easier to trace.
