Just bought an 8 N tractor, and wonder if anyone can tell me; Lifting up a (I guess fairly heavy)
scraper blade, the gear develops a noise, as if this is too much weight. Is this normal?
Is there some sort of overload clutch? What is the lifting capacity, anyways?
Thanks Ralph

Knocking from the lift when lifting a heavy load on the N tractor is fairly normal. Don't worry about it until the lift won't lift and then start worrying about it. They will knock for many years before thay give up the ghost.

If it bothers you too much you can always completely rebuild the pump using parts found on this site and others.

Change the fluids, all of them. You do not know the history or condition of any fluids so change them. Your hydraulics might be full of water. Change the engine oil too. Start with the hydraulics, rearend, and tranny. First, drain the 3/4" pipe plug in the front of the rearend and then the big plugs one in the hudraulic pump and the other in the tranny. To end the noise get Ford Hydraulic Fluid for 1939-1952 N-series. Anything to the GL-1 spec and is just plain ol" heavy mineral oil 80W90. That will most likely make the lift stronger and quiet the noise. If you run below 0-degrees you may have to change to a hydraulics/tranny/rearend fluid to spec M2C-134D (lighter fluid) but you may experience more noise and internal and external leaks.

Welcome to the fun of owning an N! First thing you might want to do is get the I&T FO-4 manual; look on the upper left of this page & click on manuals. Regarding the noise, there are no gears in the lift, just a pump. What you are hearing is the piston in a worn pump. Lots of them make noise & continue to work for years. The lift will raise about 800 lbs or so, or enough to make the tractor immpossible to steer as the front end comes off the ground. Much more than 800 lbs will blow the safety release valve in the pump.

Ralph,
Good hydraulics should handle 700 - 750 lbs
the front end gets kinda light with that weight.
HINT: get a manual from this or anyother good site
you wont be sorry.
Dan
