I have been watching the ads here on YT and I have seen a few 8N ads saying that they have the Sherman Hi/Lo transmission. How fast will an 8N go with this transmission? The reason I ask is we go on a lot of tractor rides and I am seeing more N series Fords on these rides. I am considering buying one myself.

A 4-speed Ford with overdrive is a great tractor for a tractor ride. Dell's info is right on the money. I like to run between 12 and 14 mph on rides and that means roughly 1,100-1,250 on the tach in high side of fourth. A good low-cost alternative is simply an H Farmall on 12.4 x 38s (same as old 11 x 38s) with the governor set to run slightly fast (but pick your H carefully). Another choice might be a late series 70 Oliver which will run just under 14 mph at rated rpm (according to my literature). I use a simple GPS to check speed on tractors (been 2,000-plus miles on rides here in Iowa) and most guys tend to over estimate their speed capability by a few miles per hour. By the way, my top speed on my Jubilee has been 28 mph (yes it is turned up a bit) and a friend claims 30 mph on a 641 with oversize tires and a Sherman. I don't like to go much above 16-17 but have gone 20 many times for a little ways. Mike-Iowa

Mike and everyone else thanks for the replys. I don't really need another tractor ride tractor I have 2 already and we are building a 3rd. We are looking for a nice utility tractor with a loader but it is always nice if they can double as a tractor ride tractor. We live in Iowa and have probably clocked well over 2000 miles in the last 6 years. We have been on all 6 WMT rides, 3 KGLO rides, and the last WHO ride. We also go on around 5 or 6 one day rides each year. Each year I head up a one day ride in the Charles City, IA area in early June. Our main tractor ride tractor is a Oliver 66 with special gearing that will run 30 mph with 13.6 - 38's and 35 mph with 18.4 - 38's. Our other one is a MM - Z with 13.6 - 38's which will go around 25 mph. We run with the fastest tractors on every ride, which is usually 18-20 mph. We don't need or use all the extra speed we have, but it is nice to have it if you need it.

I have been on 7 or the 9 WHO rides (missed this year with kidney stone attack). Was on all of the KGLO rides and but was only hanging around and driving a little during no. 3 this year because i was still nursing kidney stone problems.
Also on every one of the KICD rides out of Spencer.
Hope to go on the Elks ride out of Estherville this coming Sunday. My tractors are at Spirit Lake with one of them here at my W.D.M. condo. Mike-Iowa

Ollie..... ...according to the charts; with OEM 6.66:1 diffy, 10-28 ag-bar tires (now labeled 11.2-28) and full throttle of 2269rpms, the 8N's road speed in 4th and OD (0.669:1) is 23.12mph. Straight 4th is 15.47mph. Interestingly enuff, 1st and over is faster than 3rd and under..... ...Dell, who won't be driving his 8N that fast
