Best ORC ??

I need a new ORC for my 1949 8N tractor.
It has the original PTO shaft in it, (1.125).

With the tractor off and no implement attached
I can grab the ORC and lift it an inch or so.
The ORC wobbles when it is turning.
So I reckon it is worn and needs replaced.

Where is the best place to get a new ORC.
How much can I expect to pay for a quality one.

Thanks.

Sounds like you are describing my situation. I have the original 1 1/8” PTO shaft and step it up to 1 3/8” via the ORC. While I have not tested it by lifting on the end, I know it is not the tightest fit, and has some wobble while running. If you want to check the fit to see if there is too much slop (already sounds like there is) take the ORC off and connect the 1 3/8” output to whatever you are hooking it to and check the fit between those 2 pieces compared to the female portion of the ORC to your PTO shaft. (assuming whatever you are attaching to is not excessively worn). A good visual inspection of the PTO shaft will probably give you the answer you need; it did with mine. I’m done mowing for the season, so I’m holding off on swapping it out until the tractor comes home this fall.

Kelly Jewell had a NOS Hub City one on eBay the other day that didn't sell. He is around this board, find him and see if he has it still. It was listed at $60 I think. I think he hangs out in TT forum. I have his contact info, email for details if you need more.

They have slop, doesn"t mean they are bad. An inch sounds like a lot.

I can pick up the end of the ORC at least an inch.
Probably an inch and a half.
All of this slop is between the PTO shaft and the internal splines on the ORC.
So I'm wondering about my 1.125 PTO shaft also.
Could my PTO shaft be worn and need changed?
I am thinking the PTO shaft is probably hardened more than the ORC and the ORC will take all the wear.
How can I tell if I need a new PTO shaft.
If I gotta change it this would be the time to do it.

1.5" slop on the coupler? Are you sure you have the right size coupler installed??

If you have a worn PTO shaft and the money to change it then do it. Do not mess around. You do not want that stuff to come flying apart at speed. A worn shaft can not be good for an ORC or whatever is hitched up.
Take off the ORC and inspect it. If it is wacked then replace it. Same reasons as above but vice versa. Do not mess around with maintaining rotating parts; just get it done.

How can I tell if the PTO shaft is worn.
I guess I could take the ORC off it and get some measurements.
I doubt it is worn, but how can I tell.

I will check to make sure it is the right size.
I have assumed that it is till now.

Don't really have the money to change everything out.
But if I have to then I have to

My 44 has an 1-1/8" PTO shaft where the splines are worn more then half away on the ends. The splines are not worn short, they are worn narrow. They gradually taper to full-width like 1/2 to 2/3rds of the way up the shaft.
I run it with an adapter sleeve to fit a 1-3/8" ORC. The sleeve in in a couple-three pieces in there but the pieces take up the space and can not go anywhere and the ORC does not flop an inch. It"s a TSC ORC. I keep a lot of grease on it. Grease is cheap and greased stuff does not wear.

Pooh Bear, I got one from Agri Supply a year or so ago for $31.95.part#32439. no problem at all with it. also it is the quick connect type, which is the best thing since bubble gum.you do not have to drive the pin in or out,you just push the button
on the orc and off it comes. same for putting it on the shaft.Think you will like it.

Yes,it was or is 1 1/8 female end and 1 3/8 male
end. MAKE SURE your P T O shaft has the grove around it. Try it you will LOVE it.

The best I have seen or heard of is an OLD STOCK Hub City ORC when it was still made in America. I have heard they are now outsourcing their ORCs and are not as rugged as they used to be. Luckily - this was done recently, so you should still find plenty gathering dust on a shelf somewhere. Expect to pay about $60 or so for one - which is about what they charge at TSC for the very cheaply made and significantly weaker versions. I just got one recently for a spare even though my old Hub City ORC that is on my tractor now is still running fine at the present time.

Good luck,
Dan

Uou have the one 1 1/8 pto stub.

I got my 1 1/8 fem to 1 3/8 male orc at tractor supply.. it's been on for a few years now. I paid? 50$ or so. prices range from 50-80$.. though the more $$ ones are usually 1 3/8 to 1 3/8 QD units..

Remember to grease it.. that's why many ORC's wear out.
