I need to replace the rear axle seals. I purchased new seals but they are not the same as the originals. My local "N" series tractor specialist says he has never seen any like my originals. His thought was that they were from a Ferguson. When I cleaned them up and got all the gunk off they are clearly stamped FORD, so I don't know what up with him. It was his lunch brake so he may have been blowing me off. The first photo, assuming this works and the pictures show up, shows the original seal on the left with a protruding rim "A". The rim side faces the axle housing. "B" shows replacement seal without the protruding rim. The protruding rim sets into the recessed area on the axle housing at "C" in the second photo. I understand that the replacement will work but I like the originals design and would like to know if this style is still available. Thanks. I hope the pistures show up.

Robin.....you don't mention what year model tractor you have. The seals were changed in late 52.If yours is an earlier model, the seal you have will fit fine. don b

It's a 48 8n, sn# 8N111202. I know they will fit/work. I guess I, like Dell, like the fact that they are self centering and it seems to me that it provides a much better seal. I'm gonna try to post the pict of the seal out of the retainer again. I'll get it right one of these times.

Holly crap! My 1948 trailer queen's serial number is 8N111226 - only 24 tractors down the assembly line from yours!

I hope when I get mine done it looks as good as yours. You did a fine job. I'm gonna download this picture along with some info about it, your name etc. onto my computer for future reference. Here's what mine looked like about a year ago when it was a working, everyday, tractor. Now it's in pieces as I'm trying to do a complete rebuild so it will look good for the girls as it enters retirement.

Here is my "Before" pic I kept off of the original eBay auction. It was my first tractor ever and I spent way too much for it. I just planned on replacing the leaking oil seals when I got it - and you saw what happened next :-)

I wrote a short story on it that I posted a link to below. I live in Garland, TX (close to Dallas) and got the tractor in Weatherford, TX. I spent over $5k in fixing it up, and now it graces my 42 acres in Bonham, TX performing nothing tougher than the yearly Hay Wagon Rides at out annual anniversary parties. I would part with all my tractors before this one - it has significant sentimental value to me.

So what did your original rear axle seals look like? Did your original seals extend out from the retainer and fit into the cup assembly? If so did you find replacement seals like the originals or did you have to use the flat style. Just wondering. Thanks. Good story too. I'ts nice to work on these old tractors and your not alone, I have the same disease. Hope my wife dosn't find a cure.

The seals on my rear axles were already the aftermarket versions (flat style). They looked identical to the ones I got from a certain Shelby NC dealer. They have worked like a champ for over a year - even though I have low miles still.

Good luck,
Dan

Yes, thats the second photo that shows the recessed area that the seal face fits into. Thanks for getting it in. I'll try to get the other with this post. Thanks.

Robin..... ....would you believe that seal question is the reason I found this great N-Board back in 1997? My 1952 8N axle seal was a wide 2-part leather/neoprine seal that kinda centers itself between the trumpet mouth and the hub. The replacement seal that I mail-ordered was skinny and fits flush as you show in "B". I didn't like it because it wasn't self-centering like my original seal.

I carried the seal into 4-different industrial bearing/seal houses in downtown Seattle and challenged the counter guys to find me a replacement. Out came the micrometers and magnifing glasses, they were stumped. Seals and bearings are kinda "universal" and generally you don't need to buy from the stealer.

I ended driving north 100 miles to the nearest Ford tractor parts and buying a seal assy. (that was all they had) Kinda a little 1/2 "A" and 1/2 "B". At least it stuck-out a little bitt. I then drove south 200 miles to the other Ford dealer and bought his ONLY seal assy. I also bought some spare "shims" to set the bearing clearances.

Bottom line, I don't know what is going on with those seals, but my seals arn't leaking (yet). I was also "shocked" when my then wife volunteered to pack the bearing with grease. I was using a special long-fiber sticky grease. Said it was just like filling dental teeth molds at her office. Who knew?..... ..Dell

Mine is a two part seal also. I just left the seal in the retainer to show the difference between the two.

Your discription of the seal itself is identical to mine. Did yours have a retainer? I was woundering if these were used in pre 8N ford tractors but from your experience it dos'nt sound like it.I guss we have the only two that were made that way. Thanks.
