I am restoring my 48 8N. I primed and painted the gray body panels and fenders with (Ford) enamel paint supplied by the tractor dealership and my HVLP sprayer. I roughed up the surface, did a quick wipe with degreaser and later layed on a few coats one after the other and my paint dried with tiny wrinkles in it. I waited 3 days and tried a test spot with a Ford spray bomb. It wrinkled too. Isn't it cured yet? What's going on??

Hi Pelle,

Lots of good advice on this forum about painting old tractors.

I'll add my .02; If you wait too long between coats or either not long enough with the alkyd enamal, it will wrinkle. If you paint it outside in the hot sunlight, it might wrinkle on you.

Ask me how I know this:-) HTH. Rick

You said you did a quick wipe
with a grease remover.
Did you use a clean rag to completely wipe the surface
down after the remover dried.
I forgot on a trans am I painted
and wound up with a reaction similar
to yours.
Had to sand down the whole car, I guess
It became an expensive primer.

Could be the thinner you used isn`t compatable to the paint or whatever paint was on before wasn`t compatable to the new paint. Did you use a thinner suggested on the paint can. Maybe the stuff you used to wipe down the old paint wasn`t the right kind of stuff. You will have to do your homework and check into any of the things I have suggested. Post back and let us know what you find out. I used to do industrial painting and found these things out the hard way. --Bill

I think Rick probably hit it. It was sunny although I have painted in similar conditions. I used Ford paint with Ford reducer over top of Ford primer over top of bare clean metal. My rags for degreasing were clean. I think the paint had probably dried too long and I should have waited with the next coat. How long should it take in warm weather for enamel paint to cure sufficiently for another coat to be applied? Ford offers no instructions on the can.
