I have a 9n Starter, and the bendix/drive that spins out to engage the flywheel is about 3/4" from the spring, meaning you can see about 3/4" of the worm gear. In the pictures that I have seen, it looks like this should be up against the spring almost. Is this a problem ? If so, can I fix it ? How?

Roger, wash and rinse the bendix with some paint thinner or another clean drying solvent. You want it dry with no lube. Maybe it will spring back to where you want it if it is clean and dry.
That thing should fully extend and retract with authority. That said, I have a bendix on the bench that is sluggish but it starts a worn out engine just fine.

Hi Roger,

If the starter works OK, I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have the starter off the tractor, it is possible the drive is in the "engauged" position.

If this is the case, it is difficult to spin it by hand enough to get back into the "disingauged" position.

I believe I would install it like it is and try it. HTH. Rick
