First, thanks for the help!

It appears that the ends of the ballast resistor were corroded and it was dropping too much voltage.

In addition, the ignition switch, although not bad quite yet, showed it was also dropping some voltage (varied when jiggled).

Put on the spare ballast resistor and it fired up. Then replaced my LAST ignition switch. Going to go with a marine switch in the future.

The voltage at the top of the coil was 1.6v max before I replaced parts. It is now 3.4v.

I reset points after getting it running again. The gap was small due to rubbing block wear. The point set and condenser are fairly new.

It seems to still stumble a bit under heavy load. I rebuilt an old MS carb and will put it on just to see how it works.

I did the carb with a complete kit for the fun of it trying to learn techniques including left-handed drilling, tapping, electrolsis, phosphoric acid sprays, etc. It's good to learn new techniques. I hope..... .

Popster..... ....thanks fer follow-up, yer not "quite" outta the woods, yet. 3.4 volts at the top of yer squarecan ignition coil (with the points closed) is slightly "high" as we'd expect 3.2v. It's indicative of additional resistance between coil and ground (Kirchhoffs Law still rules!!!) and most likely suspect is burned ignition points. I wouldn't worry about it, just file it on yer memory banks iff'n you still have sparkie problems..... ....Dell

Dell,

Thanks for the help.

When I re-gapped the points, I polished them with fine emery cloth. I have a few sets of new points lying around. Given the hassle of removing the distributor with a front mount with a Wagner loader on it, should I just have replaced the points? Not a lot of money given the effort. Cheap- as you like to say!

Thanks.
