I have a 1939 9n. I was using a two bottom plow to plow a food plot the other day, when I hit a really big root. The pin for the top link broke. I replaced the pin, but after that the plow would not descend deep enough to turn the ground. I also noticed my hydraulic/tranny fluid leaking and pretty low, didn"t think lift "pushed" implement into ground. I"m gonna rework gaskets and refill fluid, could I be missing something else that would not allow the plow to work properly. Thanks for help.

Did you by chance "spin" the "drawbar. (The offset shaft that the 3pt hitch goes onto). If this is rotated the directional draft will not be correct. The plow will tend to go left or right and not "flow" correctly.

Check out the plow itself. You might have "sprang" it when you hit the root. By sprang I mean bent the frame. It"s not often this happens but it"s not unheard of. If the plow frame got bent, it probably won"t sink in properly or if it does, it won"t run smooth. If you hit hard enough to break a pin, chances are that"s not the only damage that was done.

Checked plow, seems to be ok. This thing is really built well. It"s an old school deal, so the frame looks to be about 1 1/2" by 3" thick steel or cast. Looks as if one of the lower lift arms are bent where it attaches to the tractor. Seems to make the plow tend to swing left. In other words, the plow isn"t centered up on the tractor. Didn"t notice this before the root. Do the implements work soley from gravity or does the lift push them into the ground?

pkebs..... ....yep, the curve of the plow,(throat) sucks the plowpoint into the ground by the foward motion of the tractor. Thats kinda gravity, it ain't hydraulic pressure that putts the plow into the ground. Hydraulic 3-point just lifts the plow outta the ground. Or in the case of a correctly operating Ferguson System, slightly "lifts" the plow to keep a "constant" draft (resistance to foward motion) on the plow depth due to varying soil conditions and maximizing traction without adding tractor weight and reduced fuel economy. This is the genius of the "Ferguson System". Plowing usually is about 6" deep and the moldboard curls the soil slice over on it side burying surface trash for decomposition..... ...Dell

Problem Solved in reply to Dell (WA), 08-27-2005 15:24:06
I reinspected the plow since I found out it was not the hydraulics. It"s an older plow, and the root must have knocked the mould board loose from an eye bolt in the back, this allowed dirt to cake behind the mould board, throwing the pitch of the plow off. I cleaned the plow and retightened the moldboard. It seems to be working again. These eye bolts and mould boards seem to be in pretty rough shape. I haven"t had the 9n very long and got the plow, disc, scrape blade, and layout plow for less than $1500. The tractor runs and works great other than a few leaks here and there.Any suggestions for finding replacement parts for this old plow? Thanks for the help guys!!

Sounds like you got a good deal. Lot of folks pay more than that for just the tractor.

Click on my name to email me for help to locate parts for the plow if it is a Ferguson, Dearborn or Ford, I need the numbers off the back of the point (share) or moldboard to tell what style you have.
