I HAVE INSTALLED A SHERMAN STEP UP AND STEP DOWN TRANSMISSION IN MY 52 8N. THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH DISC DOES NOT FIT OVER THE SPLINED INPUT SHAFT OF THE SHERMAN TRANSMISSION. DO I NEED A NEW CLUTCH DISC AND PRESSURE PLATE ?
THANK YOU

DELL AND JIM THANK FOR THE REPLYS. I WILL HEAD OVER TO THE SHOP IN ABOUT ONE HOUR. EARLIER TODAY I TOOK THE OLD INPUT SHAFT AND CHECKED THE CLUTCH. THE OLD SHAFT EASILY SLIPPED IN TO THE CLUTCH SPLINES, BUT WHEN I TRIED TO SLIDE IT OVER THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE SHERMAN THE SPLINES OF THE SHERMAN WERE TOO LARGE. I HAVE ALSO INSTALLED A NEW PILOT BEARING IN THE FLYWHEEL. THIS NEW PILOT DID FIT THE NOSE OF THE SHERMAN INPUT SHAFT. I WILL COUNT THE SPLINES ON THE SHERMAN AND THEN THE OLD INPUT SHAFT. THIS CLUTCH WILL DEFINITELY NOT WORK. THE SHERMAN INPUT SHAFT IS LARGER THAN THE ORIGINAL. I WILL MEASURE AND GET BACK TO YOU GUYS.
AS ALWAYS DELL AND JIM THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT.

Ravi..... ..this is amazing. I'm not certain why yer Sherman's splined input shaft is NOT compatable with yer splined 8N clutch hub, it should be.

Is yer clutch disc "centered"? Use yer old 8N tranny input shaft as a centering guide and release yer pressure plate attach bolts so you can jigger yer clutch disc into centering alignment with yer flywheel pilot bearing. Remember the clutch hub is an "off-set" design and the LONG SIDE is tranny side. Retighen yer pressure plate bolts 18ft/lbs after re-centering yer clutch disc.

Failing to mate yer clutch hub to yer new Sherman splined input shaft, (did you try it all by itself?) I'd remove the 4-bolt inputshaft retainer and carry BOTH the input shaft and clutch disc to an INDUSTRIAL CLUTCH house and see iff'n they could "mate" the hub to the shaft with some off the shelf clutch parts.

And NO, you shouldn't haffta replace yer clutch pressure plate.

Remember to replace the Sherman input shaft seal, ($3, cheap) with p/n 8N-7052A or A1,A2,A3,A4 (NAPA NOS-17645). Itza 4-bolt, 15min job..... ...Dell

1000 APOLOGIES TO ALL. DELL I WENT OVER AND CHECKED BOTH SHAFTS. THEY ARE THE SAME SIZE. I MADE A MISTAKE, WHAT A FOOL. I WAS IN A RUSH. ALL WENT TOGETHER WELL. JUST ONE QUESTION. ARE ALL THE TRANSMISSION BELL HOUSING BOLTS THE SAME LENGTH? I HAVE HAD THE TRACTOR APART FOR TWO YEARS AND CAN NOT REMEMBER. THANS TO ALL AND THIS
GREAT SITE.

Ravi..... ....boy, thats egg on yer face (grin), takes a realman to standup and admit it, BTDT. I'm glad it was just "operator-error".

According to my N-Ford Master Parts Catalog, there are 9 grade#5 p/n 21441-S8 7/16-14x1.12" bolts that hold the engine to the clutch/tranny housing. Torque to 45ft/lbs. I'd find a couple of 7/16-14x2" studs to act as "guidepins" to help mate up the engine and tranny..... ....Dell

Are you saying the diameter or length are wrong? OR. Are you trying to fit a fine spline nose into an older course spline clutch? This installation should be a very straight foreward swap for the original input shaft. Something is amiss,

jim
