I know this is the wrong section, but this forum gets a lot more traffice then the "Ford" Forum. Looking at a tractor coming up for auction:

"Ford 2000 tractor
2104.3 hours, new radiator, head and tires,
$1,000 worth of repairs in last four years
last used one year ago, battery needs charged,
Select-O-Speed transmission needs repair some of the forward speeds do not work"

How much do the SOS transmissions cost to repair, or how expensive is it to replace with a 4+2 transmission?

Adjusted a select o speed per I & T shop manual.
Some gears didn't work.
Backed out band 1 adjusting screw and it
cleared up. A little trial and error.

I had my 1961 Ford 6000 SOS transmission rebuilt this year for $1100. Price included all seals, gaskets, o-rings, good used valve body, and a few other bits and pieces. The rebuilder also tested it on a dyno stand and adjusted the bands at operating temperatures. This gentleman is near Cincinatti. Contact me directly if you are interested in talking to him. Philip.

I'm in Kansas so that's a bit far. But it does give me an idea of the expense I'd be looking at if I bought it.

Just a word of caution. I would be very careful of who you choose to rebuild your select-o-speed. I would not trust Case/New Holland, as their mechanics are not trained. You need to find old Ford mechanics who worked on these years ago. I know of three that I trust, one in Michigan, one in Indiana, and the one in Ohio that has the dyno test stand. I am sure the one that I used in Ohio could recommend someone near Kansas. Take a look at my shipping skid. You can easily transport by truck with this. My 6000 is in the background. I plan to have it sandblasted, primed, and painted next month (September) while my Wife is away on vacation. Philip.

That is an important distinction on the 2000s since Ford used the same model number for what are two VERY different tractors. The 4 cyl is really just the 601 in blue paint, essentialy. The 3 cly is the new line in 1966 and the 2000 is just a "derated" 3000 so that there was a "low end" selection. It came with a 4 speed tranny only (or at least as initially released in '66). The SOS in the later tractors had the early problems fixed that gave the SOS such a BAD reputation. But the SOS never lived that reputation down.

Intresting thing is that the same engineer that designed the SOS when he was "let go" by Ford went with John Deere and designed their "power shift" tranny.

We had a Ford 2000 with 3cyl. a 4x2 tranny(8 speeds) live hydraulics and pto. I dubbed it the glorified 8N. It was good tractor for us.
